Thanks ancient! When I was in college (I majored in US civilization) we saw the Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka case but not the Nine from Little Rock.
Yeah, so the gold braid can be seen on the gold shirt.
If the movie shirts were made in the correct green color, that wouldn't be a problem.
I brought the gold/green question to the guys at the New Voyages (Phase II) message board, since James Cawley has color samples and stuff from the original series.

Why not? At very least, "Everyone else" knows that the "???????" rank is the mediation level between them and the "Captain".
In schools we have Principal, Executive staff and regular teachers. No one wears stripes or other insignia but everyone (even visiting staff) works out who their colleagues are pretty quickly. Everyone has a job to do, we all realise there's a hierarchy that protocol says should be followed to maximise efficiency.

I also wonder if with Cawley having a tiny little part in the film, could he have also shared some info with them in making the new versions of the uniforms for the movie?

I'm sure he had to sign a non disclosure agreement as well.
All I know is that Cawley was staunchly anti-Trek XI until he got his cameo.
The costumes were already made before JJ met Cawley and invited him to take a cameo role.

I like the addition of elements that kinda separate the top to make it more uniform and less 'obvious costume for the actor'.
I like it, subtle but not too different.
By the way, does every starship have their very own different subtle insignia woven into their fabric????

From the glimpses we got of the Starfleet Academy sets/location shoot it seems the Enterprise delta has been retconned to represent all of Starfleet, as in TNG/DS9/Voy..

I like it, subtle but not too different.
I like it because it came be removed in pieces, which not only makes it interesting to show a more relaxed or sleeves-rolled up work situation but also because it adds a visual dimension to the uniform.

In this version of TOS, I think that the delta is the emblem for all of Starfleet much like it is in the films onward. Something I prefer.

I just watched Charlie X, remastered. The freighter crew was wearing recycled WNMHGB uniforms with crazy insignia (not sure WHAT that was supposed to be!).
On the other hand, when I watched Menagerie, remastered... the Orion club scene showed a StarFleet officer wearing a cool precurser to the dress uniform, IMO.

I think it's a good idea that the original Enterprise delta now represents all of Starfleet. After all, the different ship patches only appeared in the first three seasons of TOS, and most casual observers now identity the delta with Starfleet, after so many years of watching every other series' Starfleet members wear it. It's also less taxing on the costumers to come up with a different ship patch for every other vessel. Just be thankful they decided not to use the color scheme from TNG on, even though I prefer that scheme! -- RR
And even then it only appeared what, 3 or 4 times?
We did get a series of different ship/station patches.
1) Enterprise "arrowhead."
2) Exeter "box." (Capt. Tracy)
3) Lexington (can't recall that one offhand but Bob Wesley wore it.)
4) Constellation ("swirly" worn by Decker)
5) Starfleet Command (including starbase personnel) - stylized star/rose/sun/whatever shape)
6) Tantalus Penal Colony
I believe there were two or three others (I can't recall if Charlie X gave us another one or Bread and Circuses did).
But the intention of the production staff was that each ship would have their own insignia... the breast insignia was a parallel to the modern unit crest/squadron patch/etc. They ended up deviating from that due to budget and time constraints, however...
SO... this is one of those things I would prefer be treated the same way that the occasional paper-mache' rock was treated... something to be winked and nodded at. But that the actual INTENT was for each ship to have a unique "crest" patch.
