Stop making sense!

Saw a third season shirt in Seattle -- definitely had a greenish cast to it, though overall it favored the "gold" part of the spectrum. Some shades of "taupe" are similar. Early episodes like "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and "The Corbomite Maneuver" look even more greenish to me in a good print than what I saw in Seattle, which obviously was made of a different fabric.

NCC-1701: Nice David Byrne avatar and location. Talking Heads was a band I always had been meaning to try but it wasn't until my girlfriend introduced it to me that I really started to listen to their work. She's quite likes Byrne. This made me totally dig him too.

Yeah, that interview is pure genius. The big suit; classic! I don't know what exactly it is, but I can't stop listening to their music.

Thanks for the nice words about the avatar. :)

That may not mean a whole lot to someone living outside the US, though.

Uniforms...

Wait, there are people outside the US?! When did they get out?!

Uniforms...

Personally, I am interested in seeing the rank stripes. We know pretty much what the insignia and colors/design are.

I'm guessing TMP style stripes. Maybe with black borders to make them stand out.

Good to see someone got the reference. :D I actually got hooked on the Talking Heads after these posts by AJ and M' in the TOS forum. Since I got some of their albums I can't stop listening to them.

Glad to be of service :D

As for the green vs. gold debate ... no way in hell I'm getting involved ;)

During one of the Great Schisms, I think -- either in that dim period between the cancellation of TOS and the release of TMP or in the later one between TWoK and the premiere of TNG. You know, tribes crying out in the wilderness and wandering for 40 years -- that sort of thing.

I passed a parked car on Thursday morning. As I got closer it turned from a vivid almost-lime green to a yellow gold, depending on the angle of my approach and the intensity of the sunlight. I was screaming out, "Look at this, TrekBBS!" (Didja hear me? Woulda been night time for most of you.)

And on Friday, a work colleague was spreading avocado onto her sandwich. Omigod, I swear it was command green/gold.

"Similar, but simplifed"...

Maybe they're going back to the "Where No Man Has Gone Before" scheme with two stripes for captain and one stripe for all other officers?

Eh, that didn't make much sense when they did it before, it doesn't make much sense now.
Well, it COULD make sense... if you treat it as a starting point rather than a complete thing.

Basically, in "The Cage" and in "Where No Man Has Gone Before" you have a simpler stripes scheme... one or two big, solid stripes, or no stripes... right?

Well, suppose that the stripes in that era were more like the "sleeve rank bands" we see in TWOK... that is, maybe there were little markings or pins or whatever that went on top of those solid stripes. And they just changed to a different style for a while (TOS through TMP) but then went back again.

Enlisted would have no stripe, and would have black or silver rank. Junior officers would have no stripe, and gold rank. Senior officers would have a single stripe with gold rank. Command-grade officers (at the time, only Pike for "The Cage" and only Kirk for WNMHGB) would have two stripes... with one for rank and one for... I dunno... SOMETHING else!

This gives you three things...

1) Reasonable consistency with what we've seen on screen previously (we can just tell ourselves that they forgot to put the pins on the costumes back then... not all THAT much of a mental leap, really!)

2) A logical method of handling rank insignia with what otherwise would seem overly simplistic.

and

3) A tie to other canonical Trek materials (pretty much everything except for TOS, TAS, and TMP).

Simpler stripe design - not all the curvy stuff "wrapped" around the bands.

Do any known collectors have any of the original command uniforms? Also, what color does NewVoyages/PhaseII use? Supposedly they have the color samples from the original production. I'd assume that James Cawley knows what color the uniforms really were.

One rank system I came up with once upon a time was:

One gold stripe = Ensign
One gold, one silver = Lieutenant JG
Two gold = Lieutenant
Two gold, one silver = Lt. Commander
Three gold = Commander
Four gold = Captain

Enlisted would either have no stripes or maybe use black stripes.
