Uniform Confirmation from Trekmovie.com

I hate to bring this up but this might be the best time and place. In TOS-R, did they give Spock a light green tinge to his skin tone? In some episodes, it sure looks like it. It's cool if they did. It made him look more alien.

Spock's makeup did have a green tinge to it, and this was toned down as they refined his makeup.

Kind of reflected by the fact that he had green blood.
Oh, I got why he was greenish, I just didn't know if he was back in the day or just in the remastered stuff. I think they should've continued with the subtle grren skin tint throughout, especially in TOS-R.

I find myself wishing they'd stick to the command color as it was *supposed* to be - GREEN.

(the command uniform color in TOS was always green; it just looked goldish because of the studio lighting and the material of which the uniforms were made. It was only the dress uniform that actually *looked* as green as it was.)

Which is ironic given the amount of time spent trying to make actresses appear green.

I remember that the Fender Guitar Company made instruments in what they called "television white" (actually a sort of dull yellow-cream color which looked white on camera) because real white fucked up the TV cameras of that era and created a "glare" effect which washed out the rest of the picture.

You got the story right but the details wrong. :) It was Gibson and the color was called TV Yellow. It was used on the Les Paul Juniors and Specials and then the SG Junior and Specials once they superceded the Les Paul models.

However, you're completely correct with the concept. The guitars did appear white on B&W TV.

If you look closely at this example, you can see the wood grain through the finish.

I can live with being off on a couple of particulars as long as it's still a viable example in general. ;) The picture you've provided illustrates what I meant (though unless you are the Dave of Dave's Guitar or are authorized to hotlink images from that site, I'll need to ask that you convert the in-line image to a link.)

it's absurd for a bunch of guys to argue over whether a mixed color is green-gold or gold-green or taupe or beige-gold or whatever, because American men are only capable of seeing eight or nine colors. See, in kindergarten we're all issued these crayons, eight to a pack and each about the circumference of a horse's leg. They are: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black. We're thus imprinted, and these are the only colors we'll ever recognize.

That's great.

Don't forget "Flesh"!

I figured. :) I'm just a guitar geek, so I figured I'd help out.

As far as the pic... Normally I host things on my own site, but I was at work when I posted that and my FTP was being finicky. I've fixed that and have it hosted on my own bandwidth, now. :bolian:

They were greenish. The lights and film of the day rendered them as gold to orange. Same for the Jokers hair in Batman. It was often orange in color when it was green.

Actually it was a yellow/caucasian tone. The makeup company (Max Factor?) made up a special blend (including a common shade, "Chinese Yellow") to Fred Phillips' specifications. It was coded "LN1" (for Leonard Nimoy 1), and this same colour was sourced to use on Suzie Plakson as Dr Selar in TNG.

So anyway...

I'm wondering how they're going to display "similar but simplified" rank insignia on that sleeveless number...

There's no debating that the color was really a shade of green, but there's being accurate, then there's being accurate. Huge numbers of people think the color is gold. It even more or less officially became gold. It was deliberately gold in TAS, TNG, and Sisko wore gold in the DS9 episode. My old Halloween costume (back when you could buy them off the shelf) is gold.

For what it's worth, even today colors aren't always picked up accurately on TV. An appropriate example in this case is the green color on Carl Edwards Aflac-sponsored Sprint Cup car. It looks anything from bright lime green to mustard yellow on TV depending on the light and angle. But to the naked eye, it's definitely a shade of green.

What I find kind of interesting is when they made TMP, they eschewed the red-gold-blue uniforms because they thought those bright colors would look cartoonish on the big screen. Obviously not a concern of Abrams. And, he's probably right.

Actually, I'm seeing things I never knew now that I'm watching the TOS-R episodes in HD on www.startrek.com. Thank you, CBS.

I'm not finding a link to said video... Please help.

Evidently they have been removed... dammit! I had only watched two episodes. Perhaps it has something to do with the commercials for the re-mastered DVDs on sale now. I saw commercials for Season 2 on DVD. Why let people watch for free if you are trying to sell them? We all know how much they love their money.

Bickering about colors! I can't fucking believe it!

Don't be silly. This is TrekBBS, where we'll bicker about anything until the cows come home.

Hell, we'll even bicker about the :censored:ing cows! :p

These have seemed to come and go. Not sure what's up with that.

^^
Yeah, I just checked and now they are back again (for the moment).
I wasn't aware they came and went like that. Thanks for the heads up. Now pardon me while I go watch ST in HD...
