Ungrateful Actors

@ ShatnersToupee I think you should inform yourself befor you are writing your posts.

1. Beltran`s one of the Voy-actors who attends conventions rarely. Most of the others are on conventions more often- Mulgrew, McNeill, Phillips, Picardo, Russ, Wang.
Since 2006, when I met Robert Beltran at Fedcon he has been only at 3 conventions.

2. Beltran hasn`t done many films, but he`s been at Big Love and he was on stage in LA and San Francisco in leading roles.
He also will be on stage at LA Theatre Center this month in the play "Devil’s Advocate" by Donald Freed.

Thanks, but I am informed. How often Beltran attends conventions is irrelevant.

But you yourself pointed to Beltran's convention habits and post-Trek activities to his ungrateful attitude. Now that someone's pointed out a fallacy in that argument, you're saying it's irrelevant. You're moving the goalposts to your very own points you're trying to prove. That's the height of denial.

Beltran has been working since Voyager.
Currently he's a reaccuring character on HBO's "Big Love".

Beltran was a recurring character on season 3 of Big Love. That's over.

Jeri Ryan doesn't do Cons because she's got a family & restaurant to run.
She actually works less as an actress due to this which is why many of her roles lately are temporary.
Where've you been, this info has been published in several different types of magazines from Trek to culinary.

Jeri is doing cons again, but has to schedule them around work.

In the last couple of years she has:

Filmed 2 tv movies.

Had a regular role (replacement for an actress on maternity leave) on "Leverage."

Had multiple recurring & guest roles on TV shows, including one of the L&Os.

Her new series (she's a regular) is premiering at the end of the month.

She just filmed a web series based on Mortal Kombat.

Acted as a judge on one of the chef shows. (Can you tell I'm too lazy to go look this up?)

And that's just in the time since she returned to work after having her daughter. That's pretty good for 2 years.

....and it's front page news here of his new acting gig.

Wasn't she on Iron Chef?
I also know she guess starred on "Two & a Half Men" as well.

Just a small correction, teya, he has also been in season 4 of Big Love. but it doesn`t matter.

I think RB didn´t like to play Janeway`s Yesman so many seasons. He was cast as a strong Marquisleader. Robert mentioned at conventions that he very liked the script of the Voyagerpilot. But he didn`t like what the writers did with his character.

Heh! Cool!

I'm starting season 3 now. So do he and Adam Beach (who plays his son) share scenes?

Yes they do.
But unfortunately both of them don`t have too many scenes in the 4. season.

Cool. I've seen the first couple of eps with Beltran... I hate to say it, but I'm not all that impressed... I think it's just his acting style that doesn't engage me.

Really?
I remember that there have been many viewers in the Big Love bord who liked his appareances.

The same thing happened with Pierce Brosnan and James Bond in the 80s -- he really wanted to take over the role, but he was forbidden because of his contract on Remington Steele. Timothy Dalton was hired instead, and Brosnan swore never to do regular network TV again.

Wow ok. Although I didn't hate Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan was a much better James Bond IMHO

*sigh*

I find Beltran's acting rather... laconic. I prefer my Indians showing their absurd humor.

Maybe he'll punch it up in season 4.

Think Beltran was sold on Moore's ideas of Voyager and got screwed when he left. Beltran is actually arguing the show needed more character development.

So agree with this...but lot of other comments also. (contrary? moi?).

I don't know anything about real Beltran or behind-the-scenes, and frankly as viewer couldn't care less - although it is fascinating and illuminating. But I do feel from watching later seasons that he like many co-stars suffered from the over-emphasis on Seven, necessary as may have been for series development/survival.

I read somewhere that at any given moment, 90% of actors aren't working. Most actors, especially ones starting out, would kill for a series gig. Steady paycheck, little to no travel, greater industry exposure, the chance to direct, etc. Compare that to most actors who go to countless auditions and struggle just to get bit parts and pay rent. So to see people like Garrett Wang and Robert Beltran, who aren't very good actors to begin with, badmouth Voyager is pretty disappointing.

On the one hand, I'm glad they're speaking out. Much of what they've said is what I and a lot of other fans think, that the writing was formulaic, that Seven of Nine got too much attention, that Rick Berman and Brannon Braga were incompetent. But you'd think they'd be more appreciative of the opportunity they were given.

Take Wang. Had barely any acting experience when he auditioned for Voyager, was hired over 100 other people, and in the early seasons he had a reputation for tardiness. If it hadn't been for People Magazine naming him to their 50 Most Beautiful Persons list, I'm sure he would've been let go instead of Jennifer Lien. But instead of being grateful that he didn't get the ax, instead of being grateful that he gets paid a lot of money to just stand there, he whines about not being allowed to direct. Give me a break. I'm no fan of Rick Berman. I think he's made some really bad decisions. But not letting Wang direct was one of the best things he ever did. From the sound of it, he didn't earn that privilege.

And then there's Beltran who complained about not having enough to do. Well maybe if you showed more interest in your job, your bosses would've listened. Kate Mulgrew, Robert Picardo, and Roxann Dawson all went to the writers and offered ideas to help shape their characters. But Beltran couldn't even bother reading entire scripts. Why would anyone want to write material for an actor with his attitude?

I think Kate Mulgrew had the right mindset. I'm sure she didn't always care for the way the writers wrote her character. And I know it had to be difficult to see them bring in Borg Barbie and give her all the good material. But she also seemed to appreciate what she had. A steady job on a hit show, a loyal fan base, and a cast who, for the most part, was fun to be around.

People like Wang and Beltran are just overprivileged, ungrateful children who don't deserve any sympathy. But I look forward to hearing them spill more dirt about Voyager.

I disagree. Seven of Nine did get the bulk of material in the later seasons, and to the detriment of other characters. I think Beltran and Wang had perfect rights to complain.

But Jeri Ryan really was capable of handling what they gave her. Beltran and Wang, not so much (outside of "Timeless," of course).

I thought Beltran was decent in all the eps. from "Nemesis" and before. Everything after besides "Timeless", he was a cardboard cut out in.

Wang's head was never in the game to begin with.
He was more into his party life off set, than he was on.

Manuevers, definitely. One of the best episodes ever. And certainly one of his best performances.

Same with Coda and Scorpion II

What I find ironic is one of the best Chakotay eps. IMO is "Distant Origin". What makes it ironic is, he's got a very small part in it and it really doesn't have anything directly to do with him. Yet, it's still a well done ep.

I loathe Distant Origin, I'm not sure why, I just do.

But yeah, it would be one of his best. And one of Braga's best.

Before "Nemesis," I didn't find him exceptionally bad at all; he definitely had his moments. But that episode was just dreadful to watch, because between his laconic delivery and all the other soldiers being so low energy, the entire first half of the episode was stuck in molasses. Before that, he seemed to really get energized doing action stuff, too.

I thought he was great in "The Killing Game" as the army captain or whoever he was.
