Well, I'm gonna open an even bigger can of worms - did anyone notice in hte trailer that the nacelles seem really big and oversized?!?! YOWZA!!

..."starbase63:
Please settle the arguement that has erupted since the release of the teaser…which shows the Enterprise being built in a ground based drydock (someone seems to have taken a gag photo seriously). Though not official, it has been accepted from “The Making of Star Trek” on, and even listed in the entries both in Michael Okuda’s Star Trek Encyclopedia and the Library at startrek.com that the ship was assembled in orbit…even in the Enterprise series set 85 years before TOS we see ships being built in orbit. Will we actually see the 1701 finished in the San Francisco Orbital Yard, or has this concept been thrown out? After all, duranium will be just as strong in orbit as it would on Earth…

Roberto Orci: Without giving anything away, nothing in the teaser precludes final assembly in space...."

(It's the 4th Question with Answer, under the second pic, in the article.)

He kinda-sorta confirms in an Ass-Backward way, that we WILL see the ENTERPRISE being built in the movie.

So it appears that with the info now given, the Teaser ENTERPRISE may actually be in the movie!
Actually, all this proves is that Bob Orci has read "The Making of Star Trek," where it is DEFINITIVELY STATED that the original intention of the production team was that the ship's components were built in the San Francisco Naval Yards (a real place in the real world) and were assembled in orbit.

The fact that so many people are actually claiming that this is a VIOLATION OF CANON is merely another indication of the unfortunate schizm which as come about as a result of the "fandom split" between "new fans" and "classic fans."

The original team said it... if you then come along and say "Roddenberry, Black, Coon, Jeffries.... all those guys... were WRONG. Because we're now saying that it was entirely built in orbit!"... if you come along and say that, you're REWRITING Star Trek "history."

It is DEFINITIVE that the original intention was that the ship's components were built in the (real-world) San Francisco Naval Yards, and assembled in space. PERIOD.

I LOVE me some "Making of Star Trek", and the fact JJ & Co went back to it just makes me that much more confident in their vision.

That's not quite accurate, from perusing this topic of where the ship was built there seem to be a vocal group of "diahard ToS only" fans insisting Orci ect are doing it wrong because it doesn't seem to conform to some "fanon" concept about Star Trek technology.

Keep in mind, I agree with you since the shipyards are a real place *on Earth* and the dedication plaque makes it rather clear that is what is meant since it would have been easy enough to add "SanFan Orbital shipyards" if that were the original intentions but no one did so.

And another thing...isn't anyone else FED UP with the fact that everyone keeps calling these things " trailers " when they come BEFORE the movie! If they don't call it something else immediately, I'm boycotting.

;)

The term 'trailer' comes from the fact that they original did come on after the movie was over.

Jeeze louise...am I the only one embarassed by the dramatic tendencies among some of assembled fandom?

Not by a long shot.

If there's one thing I learned since discovering the internet, it's that Star Trek fans think waaaaaaaaaaay too literally.

I remember when the first trailers for Insurrection came out, they had some stock footage from Generations and First Contact. So naturally everyone jumped to the conclusion that it would be another time travel movie.  :brickwall:

There's no way to do polls anymore? DAMN-DAMN-DAMN-DAMN-DAMN!

Please, Mods, let's TRY to get that back... it's one of the better "tricks" in the UBBS system and so far, I'm not seeing a whole heckuvalot that the VB system gives us that we didn't have before. I can live with it (as if I have a choice, right?) but c'mon... no polls???

ARRRRGGGGHHH!!!

My understanding is that there can only be one poll per thread, now.

Which is fine by me, because generally I hate those "bonus" polls that people sometimes start when we are already 30 posts into a thread.

^ The original poll is gone as well silly, or I wouldn't have said anything.

* Confused *

Yeah, I know. But that might just be a casualty of the transfer from the old board. I had heard in another thread that there could only be one poll per thread from here on out. Not sure whether that needs to be in the initial post, or if it can come later.

^ Guess the only way to find out is to start a new post and see if one can add a poll to it.

Anywho back on topic.....

Back in the day one would spend a afternoon at the movies, they used to show the "Main Attraction" followed by Trailers, called so becuse they followed the first film, then they'd showed like shorts and newsreels, followed by the second film, called the "B" feature, this is where the term "B" movies came from, useually the 2nd feature was a film that didn't have big name stars in it and a smaller budget.

* Why do I even know this stuff ? *

I don't know why you know that stuff Woulfe, but I'm glad you do! I found that everything, so thanks for sharing. :) I love learning where words come from.

This is what happened. No polls came across with the transfer. Only one poll is allowed per thread and I believe it has to be started right away.
