I have asked these two questions on two other forums so far and have thus far obtained no answers, and actually very few responses at all. Since this forum is directly related to the *literature* of Star Trek maybe some one here can help *crosses fingers* Don't think poorly of me but I'm going to be lazy and just copy paste the questions from those forums to this one since I've already typed them both out twice =P

I've been reading a lot of Trek novels lately and I'm enjoying many of the authors' portrayals of the original Enterprise crew and the adventures they may have had that were never in the television show. Many of the novels are concerned with events towards the end of the crew's careers, but few seem to look at how it all started.

So my question is, does anyone have any recommendations of books that look at how it all began? Specifically first meetings between Kirk and McCoy or others? I love beginnings much more than endings, they're usually much more upbeat and forshadowing is always fun. So far the best I've found is Enterprise: The First Adventure.

Being a fan of the show I began reading the TOS novels a few months ago and have been happily plowing through them since. The last one that I've finished has left me with some unanswered questions though, I'm hoping some one here might be able to help.

I finished Shadows on the Sun by Michael Friendman, a story about McCoy which covers his past history, especially about his ex-wife. The book was great, but it ends just as the original crew of the enterprise are to retire (after Genesis and Rura Penthe).

My question is, does anyone know of any novels that address the original crew or McCoy specifially, after this point? The book left off on a rather sad note and I would love to find out what happens to McCoy in his later years, and there doesn't seem to be anything difinitive on Memory-Alpha.
Thanks to anyone who actually takes the time to read and/or answer this...

If I recall correctly, there are some early 2010 novels focusing on 4 beginnings - Kirk and Carol Marcus are 2 of them - I think S D Perry is writing this

Excelsior: Forged in Fire presents a Sulu adventure post Star Trek VI; Mere Anarchy also has 2 novellas that sit after this time. Vulcan's Soul takes a look at Spock's work with Romulans in 2376 (I believe - I haven't read these yet, so I'm working off the back covers); Spock also plays a pivotal role in the first Titan novel, Taking Wing. Enjoy!

The Captain's Daughter is also a Sulu adventure.
The Vulcan's Soul trilogy has Spock, Uhura and Chekov.

I think McCoy tends to be mentioned in passing in books set later. Memory Beta's a better place to look for character/novel infmoration than Memory Alpha.

I don't know if you've read the excellent Crucible books by David R George III, but IMO they are a must for TOS fans. They definitely take McCoy, Spock and Kirk pass STVI.

Oh? I had no idea the cruicible books addressed the timeline after STVI, I'll definitely have to check those out now. I had planned to already but they weren't really high up on the priority list. They are now lol. Mere Anarchy too. Thank you all for the quick responses, I really appreciate it!

For some good Kirk/McCoy history, I'd recommend Howard Weinstein's novel Covenant of the Crown, as well as Brad Ferguson's Crisis on Centaurus.

Another work to consider would be the trilogy called My Brother's Keeper by Michael Jan Friedman... though be aware that its version of events differs substantially from McIntyre's Enterprise: The First Adventure.

Have you checked Memory Beta? It's the "companion" site to Memory Alpha which includes all of the non-canonical information developed in the licensed fiction:

http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Leonard_McCoy

I'd also suggest picking up the reference book Voyages of Imagination, which offers brief synopses of every novel written (as of its publication in 2007) as well as a comprehensive chronology in the back.

McCoy shows up all over the place post-STVI. Some appearances that I remember include,
Mere Anarchy (various)
Vulcan's Forge (2295) - also has Spock and Uhura..
Vulcan's Heart (2329/2344)- also has Spock and Uhura...
Well of Souls (2336)
Double Helix: Red Sector (2350's) - also has Spock...
Catalyst of Sorrows (2360)-also has Uhura...
Crossover (2371)-also has Spock and Scotty...
Crucible McCoy: Provenance of Shadows (various)
A Singular Destiny (2381)
...and he is also one of the main characters in Shatner's various trek books.

I think he may live forever...

^ shhh.... don't let the authors hear you say that! the next thing you know they'll be writing McCoy death scenes in multiple books. ;)

other books McCoy showed up in:
- TNG: Double Helix: Red Sector
- Safe Habors in Tales of the Dominion War with Scotty
... there're probably more

Rihannsu: The Bloodwing Voyages series (which concentrates on the founding of the Romulan Star Empire and the Federation's relationship to Romulus) is set very soon after the end of TOS - I believe the first book is set something like two years after "The Enterprise Incident." It has quite a bit on Kirk in it, and one book in particular has a lot on McCoy, and in all the books the other major characters also make some appearances.

Actually, no; The Romulan Way refers to "The Enterprise Incident" as something that happened eight years before, and it's a year after My Enemy, My Ally (the first "Rihannsu" book, though the second Duane-universe book, preceded by The Wounded Sky).

^ Really? You could be right - betting on your memory, Dennis, is a surer thing than betting on mine. But Ethrin said he (or she) liked "beginnings more than endings," and while this series isn't exactly a beginning, it most certainly isn't an ending since there the TOS characters are, plugging away on the Enterprise just like they did in the TV show. That's why I thought he might like it.

^ See? See? I have just inadvertently proven my point about "betting on your memory rather than mine."

Sorry. Consider it a typo - a really enormous and unlikely typo.

Some early stories I've read include Kobyashi Maru and Strangers In the Sky. Both deal with early TOS career moments for a number of characters.

You might want to check out Vulcan's Glory, which tells the story of Spock's and Scotty's first mission on the Enterprise under Captain Pike.

I'd actually heard about several of the books you guys have recommended but didn't realize that McCoy was in some of them or that they were placed in the timeline where they were. Reviews only tell you so much, I appreciate the advice from you all, thanks again. Looks like I have some hunting/reading to do =)

Oh, and I've read Vulcan's Glory, it was a fantastic story, one of the best ones I've read so far actually. Reading it and then watching Amok Time just makes the episode all that much better, kind of gives you a little extra insight as to Spock's attitude and reactions.

As several people have mentioned here, my first Crucible novel, Provenance of Shadows, is largely a Dr. McCoy tale. The story covers a lot of ground, stretching from the original series to well beyond Generations.

And a great story it is, David. :) If you are fond of McCoy, Ethrin, this is a must read.

I would like to second several of the books already mentioned, especially Strangers From The Sky, pas well as the Bloodwing Voyages omnibus (The Romulan Way, Book 2 , has McCoy as a main protagonist). Since you liked Vulcan's Glory so much (as did I), I think you would truly enjoy Strangers From The Sky. IMO, it's one of the best Trek books ever, and absolutely essential for fans of TOS. Amongst several important timelines, a crucial thread concerns the actions of the brand new Captain of the USS Enterprise and certain key crew members.

I'd also heartily recommend The Entropy Effect, which boasts a ton of wonderful stuff for Spock and McCoy as they work together to...well, just read it;). Vulcan's Forge also spotlights McCoy as well as Spock post ST VI. (Dang them thar filmmakers for killing off Kirk so soon!:scream:)

I know what you mean about there being few books about the beginnings of the crew of Enterprise. I'm looking forward to the new books in 2010, hoping they'll fill in some of the gaps.
