Has anybody seen the 2004 Lost In Space Pilot that actually liked it? I was very shocked and surprised to discover it for myself just a few days ago. I REALLY liked it, although most viewers absolutely HATED it. I loved the look...the new ideas...new characters...and that they weren't going to neccesarily have or rely on a Dr. Smith character. Here's a quick synopsis if you haven't seen it yet.

The year is 2097, and Colonel John Robinson is a highly decorated military leader. In 2082, the Earth was attacked by aliens...and John led the military forces that defeated the aliens in an attack known as "Robinson's Raid". In 2097, now a highly reveared and admired military Colonel, John has retired and plans to move he and his family to a colony planet called Nova. John Robinson's family includes: his doctor/wife, Maureen; his eldest son, teen-age David; his teen daughter, Judy; his second son and third child, ten-year-old Will; and his infant daughter, Penny. (Note: David and Judy Robinson appear to be practically the same age. It is possible that they could be fraternal twins. But this fact is unknown.)

The Earth Military has a big send-off going-away party for John, who is a military celebrity. At the party, Judy meets a young military pilot named Don West. Since it's her last night on Earth, Judy sneaks out of her home to a party and reunites with Don...and falls for him hard. Don, however has no idea that Judy is the daughter of the famous John Robinson. Judy sneaks back home in the morning in time to pack. John confronts David about his poor school/academy scores. David refuses to talk and it's a stalemate. Maureen sences that David feels inferior to his celebrity military father...and tries to convince John to confront David and tell David that he (John) loves and respects him. John stubbornly refuses saying that David 'knows' that he (John) loves him. Before the family leaves their Earth home, they discovers that Will (who is a genious) has built a robot in a building near the house. Will builds the robot to protect himself from his school bullies. The family packs and travel to a space station called "The Jupiter" orbiting the Earth.

The Jupiter has many pods which will house the space travelers and will separate from the Jupiter when they reach the planet Nova. The Robinson family are assigned the second pod named the Jupiter II. There is still a bit of turmoil between David and John, who can't seem to reconcile their father/son relationship. The family leaves the pod to explore the Space Station Jupiter and meet the other space fairing families. The commander of the Space Station Jupiter asks for John to come to the command room immediately. John asks David to accompany him, but he refuses. John then asks Will who excitedly goes with him. Judy comes across Don who is also aboard the Jupiter. Don discovers that Judy is the daughter of John Robinson and almost craps his pants. Don is now afraid that his military career is in jeopardy (apparently Judy and Don had some type of sexual tryst after the party the previous night). Don tells Judy he can never see her again and walks away from her.

Meanwhile, John and Will are in the command room. The commander tells John that they are getting some strange signals and if John can help. John discovers the signals are from the aliens who had attacked them previously. Soon the entire space station Jupiter is surrounded by alien ships. John tells the commander to tell all families to rush to their pods immediately, and then to jettison all the pods and abandon the Jupiter Space Station, which is now crawling with the strange reptilian-like aliens.
Alone in the Jupiter II Pod, Maureen cradles her infant daughter Penny. As Maureen holds her daughter, she sees that the door to the pod is being opened. Suddenly an alien steps inside and fires a laser at Maureen and Penny. Maureen manages to sidestep the shot...then she hits a switch that causes the door to slam shut...instantly hitting and killing the alien.

On her way back to the Jupiter II pod, Judy is attacked by an alien. Don saves her, and takes her back to the Jupiter II pod. As John and Will make their way back to the pod they find David who joins them. As they near the pod, they are attacked by aliens but make it inside the Jupiter II pod. However, in all the confusion, Will was quickly taken by the aliens before the pod door shut.

Refusing to leave the Space Station without Will, John leaves in search of his youngest son. John eventually locates Will and kills the alien. They both make it back safely to the Jupiter II Pod and the pod door shuts. The Pod now has only seconds before it jettisons from the space station. As the seconds tic down, Maureen asks John where David is. Bewildered, John asks his wife what she means. Maureen proceeds to tell John that David had subsequently left the pod in order to search for both John and Will.

The countdown has terminated and the Jupiter II has jettisoned from the space station. Outer space is full of explosions as the space station and other capsules ignite. John sees Don at the controls of the pod and demands for Don to take them back to the exploding space station so that he can save David. For a moment, we see David running inside the space station. It is exploding all around him and he has no place to go...on either side of him are aliens carrying laser guns. Knowing his fate, David stops running and closes his eyes as the aliens descend upon him. The entire space station explodes.

The Robinson family views this with wide-open eyes full of shock. Maureen weeps as she holds her infant Penny in her arms and whispers "David" as the station disintegrates.
Now the alien ships are after the Jupiter II. They are having a power shortage and are being outrun. Will gets up and opens a huge box aboard the Jupiter II. The robot he created is inside. Will turns the robot on and connects it with cables to the power grid of the Jupiter II. With the extra power from the robot, the Jupiter II goes into hyper-drive and escapes the aliens. However when the hyperdrive shuts down, they have no idea where they are. John, who is seated beside Don at the control console, introduces himself to Don. An embarrassed Don shakes hands with his idol and hero, John Robinson.

The Robinson Family are heart-stricken at David's loss...especially John Robinson. John regrets that he and David were at odds with each other when David was killed. With David's death, John no longer has the chance to confront David about his (John's) love and respect that he has for David. The reconciliation between father and son is now impossible.

Don announces that there is little power, food, and water. Judy asks aloud if they are going to just die stranded where they are in outer space. John looks at his grieving wife as she cradles Penny. John then takes both Judy and Will into his arms and promises them that he will find a way for them to get home. John also promises his mournful family that he will find a way to get David back. The scene then moves to the battered and broken Jupiter II. It has been heavily damaged and fuses and broken wires and cables are lying everywhere. Then the scene moves outside where we see the Jupiter II hovering in suspended space...broken and all alone. This is how the pilot ends.

The pilot can be found in youtube if you want to see it for yourself.

Yes, I did post there. BUT I was wondering if ANYONE liked it. Everybody seemed to really hate it. I was just wondering if I was the ONLY one who liked it. Plus I wanted to add a positive synopsis from how I viewed it. I can't possibly be the Only person who liked it.

I liked this television pilot better than the 1998 movie. However, I disliked both versions of the Jupiter 2 because neither was similar to the original. In TMP and J.J. Abrams films we see 1701 Enterprise designs that are similar enough to the original.

Well, we didn't have a brewery in the engine room of the original, but I digress. ;)

I watched the first 9 minutes, part I and:

- Whomever did the set design either lacks any vision on what the future may look like and/or a budget to make one because from where I'm sitting it looked like someone's kitchen / living room / bedroom from the late 1990's let alone in the year 2087. Shit - GE has more futursitic looking refigerators you can buy today.

- Will's headphones like the kitchen IMO lack any orignality in terms of the future of audio.

- I'm going to echo one of the posters on You Tube who commented that this was, "90210 in Space." No wonder it never got green lighted beyond the pilot.

- The original LOS has more vision and for what it lacked in terms of being campy it made up for in being at least amusing at times. This re-make has neither.

And for whomever said this was better than the film, I disagree. At least the film gave us a more realistic vision of the future whereas this seems like the watered down '90's.

I think the 2004 remake would have been much better than if the pilot had been sold and special effects added. WE have to remember that the original series was meant to be much more serious. Dr. Smith was a serious character in the first season...and very shrewd and sharp thinking. AS time passed...Smith mutated into the bumbling cowardly fool that he was at the end of the series. I loved Smith. But I was also very young when I first saw the series and of much simpler mind. My parents never watched it with me, considering it a "kiddie' show.

I thought the 2004 had LOT to explore. Maybe in this incarnation Don West would actually come around to liking Judy. In the original, Don liked Judy in the original...but after the first season, Don seemed closer attached to John Robinson than Judy, who was only shown at the hydroponic garden or helping with the laundry. The 2004 Judy actually had a personality...and part of it lusted after Don West. Maureen was actually a medical doctor. The new character of David Robinson added a new dimension to the series. An average teenage boy to counterbalance ten year old genius Will.

I thought the sets were marvelous. The Jupiter Station, and the Jupiter II Pod looked fine to me. There wasn't the amount of room in the Jupiter II as in the 90's movie version, but this only made the series appear more realistic to me. The Jupiter II probably did combine a lot of rooms together. But remember in the original? The kitchen was basically some chairs around a conveyer belt. When they landed on a planet, the Robinson's would have to remove the pilot/control area and remove that huge navigation thing that was in the center. Then they put out things little better than lawn chairs. The 2004 version just looked and made things a bit more believable. I could see the Robinson's living in this pod (even though it was small). We didn't see the bedrooms, they could have been bigger. Heck there's even a bathroom onboard, which wasn't on the original. Also, we didn't see the other decks so that WAS a disappointment. But...I was pretty much satisfied with the sets on the 2004 pilot. I think the set in the movie was WAY overdone. In the movie version they were on a peaceful mission...but they dressed more like WWIII.

This was Smallville as Lost in Space. It deserved more of a chance than the Witches of Eastwick got a couple years ago, or even the Vampire Diaries, but it was made in the same spirit.

I'm more than certain I had that exact pair of headphones in 2004. I think they were COBYs?

Well...Maybe some things CAN"T be improved all that much. Headphones are basically headphones. We didn't have the headphones on ourselves...so...we don't know exactly what the quality was on those headphones. The ONLY improvement that I'd know of would be that the headphones could just unfold/foldout like much of the equipment did in the Lost IN Space Movie. But that didn't really impress me all that much. The headphones were fine in my opinion. Some things change drastically...while other simpler things (headphones) basically stay the same. Remember in the original when Penny listened to music. It was on the old style tape that you had to feed into the machine...then attach it to the other spool on the other side. And poor Penny didn't even have the choice of headphones cause she didn't have any. :) Ohh almost forgot. After Penny listened to her music...she'd have to rewind the tape and place it back on the original spool.

Thanks for that comment. I'm glad somebody else kinda liked the 2004 Pilot idea. I would have watched it. I think there was LOTS of potential for this show. Many fans didn't like that there wasn't a Dr. Smith character. But I really don't think that they needed him for this series. I have a theory about him...and will discuss it another time. :)

Like most shows, I'm sure the pilot would have been tweaked if it went to series. This was a pilot in the true sense, not a 1st episode with an order of X amount of episodes after. I like a lot of what is there, it would have been nice to give it a chance.

Laughing at the posts saying :"I don't like this about the LIS pilot because this and that doesn't look or act exactly like it does in the original series." You guys are hilarious and boring.

A lot of shows based on previously established material seem to find success on television, even when the pilot is poor. I thought this was not well done, but neither were the first episodes of Smallville, Vampire Diaries (when Elena actually narrated her diary), or many other shows on the WB/CW.

My original impression from the other thread.

Well is it really illegal? It was never for sale in the first place?

Director: John Woo..YES John Woo. Starring: nobody. $2 million budget..not low budget.

I noticed it has a 7.0 rating after 72 votes, that's not that bad. They made John Robinson a military commander, instead of professor or scientist as in the other 2 incarnations. There's no Dr Smith redux, unlike the 1998 version. Instead there is a surprise attack by an alien species that Earth has been at war with. Its not stated specifically that Earth is in any dire natural or artificial danger, its simply a colonization mission with several "ark" ships. The pilot includes some of the teen angst, and trepidation at moving from Earth, but not quite so much at length as the movie. The actors are all passable but none really jump out at you. I think it would have been re-cast if it had made it to series.

The plot is like the original series. The story mainly focuses on setting up the stories to follow, but only in a very fast 42 minutes..not really enough time to develop any element. I think this show would have had a chance with some tweaking. It was more serious than the 1998 movie, but not nearly as dynamic. Odd considering the director. I like the general tone and wouldn't have minded watching the show try to erase memories of the original.

I think my memory basically agrees with this, the only change is that the rating fell on imdb to 6.1. I might drag the disk out and watch it.

I liked the characters who were cast in the 2004 Pilot. I thought that they did outstanding jobs in my opinion. I really got into the story...and the problems the family faced. In the movie version, the two youngest kids (Penny & Will) appeared as spoiled brats. Judy was just plain right out a self-righteous snob. However, I didn't get that opinion with the 2004 Pilot. Judy was just a teenager who had never had a chance to make friends...and fell head over heels in love with Don at first glance. Will was a genius kid who was bullied in school...but was overall excited about moving to the planet Nova. David was my favorite character. He was a typical teen who wasn't particularly smart and felt overshadowed by his father who was more or less worshipped by the entire world. I would almost give anything to know if David survived or not. I have a theory...I will mention it later. :)

Rama. Is the 2004 Pilot on disk? Where can I get it? I've looked on Amazon but didn't see it there. Were the special affects added for the disk? I mean, I've only seen the pilot on youtube, and it was at times overlit...practically no color. You can see the straps on Will and David when they should be suspended in space. It was also a bit blurry overall. Let me know. Thanks! :)
