Ultimately Human: 45th Anniversary Special Edition

HAPPY 45th ANNIVERSARY STAR TREK!

45 years ago on this date, September 8 1966, the original Star Trek television series premiered. It was a low-budget, sometimes campy, space adventure described by it's creator as 'wagon train' to the stars. Or so it seemed on the surface. Once you looked deeper though, you found much more. Which is why 45 years later, so many people still remember Star Trek and still watch it with an almost religious fervor. It's become a part of our culture, and for all of us, a part of our daily lives.

Today, I wanted to specifically honor the original series. More specifically, the men and women who played their parts in making the show what it was. Most of them in front of the camera; a few behind it. Some of them as series regulars, others as one-off guest stars who made an impact. So I went about doing something a little unique for the September 2011 edition of 'Ultimately Human' and created our first and (to date) only themed edition. A 45th Anniversary Special Edition, presented in classic 'black and white' photographs for an extra touch of something... unique.

Enjoy!

Which Ones Are Your Favorites & Why?

Black and white photography has the quality of making the subject of the photograph appear timeless, which is what Star Trek is. If after 45 years, the original fans are still talking about it and new fans are forged every day, I'd say Star Trek has managed quite a feat of temporal endurance.

Thank you for this special collection, Frontier, and happy anniversary!

Lovely tribute to those key to Star Trek's success and why it's remembered. Many portraits there I'd never seen before.

Yay for humanity!

Thanks for including Bob Justman and Matt Jeffries - their contributions cannot be overlooked!

Those photos are amazing. I love the ones of Diana Muldaur, Nichelle Nicholls, Mark Lenard and Majel Barrett.

I concur. I'd have liked to include a few more behind-the-scenes folks, but photos of them are hard to come by. I do have one of D.C. Fontana from back in the day, which was included in one of the very first Rare Photo specials (this was before UH was even a pipe dream) and I think there is a photo of Leonard Nimoy with William Ware Theiss in another such issue, but beyond them, it's tough to find photos of many of the others.

A few of these photos I've been sitting on for years. Susan Oliver from the Cage, and Grace Lee Whitney for example. They'd languished in my archives for various logistical issues for a long time. I'm glad I had them for this though; better to save them for something special like this than try to squeeze them into a more standard collection.

I really was uncertain on doing the black and white thing at first; especially in this decade and with Trek itself having been so well known back in the 60s for it's bright colors. But I ended up with about 15 out of the 18 photos being such by their own design, and so the handful I had color of I swapped out for B&W to sew it all together and give it that classic collection look. :)

Great pictures! But something about Shatner's picture made me want to punch him right in the face.

Susan Oliver did an Andy Griffith episode once. I don't know how, but she was even MORE stunning in it than she was in Trek.

Ricardo Montalban's photo is so overly manly almost to the point of parody, especially compared to all the other photos. Love it! :)

Long live Star Trek!

I think this has been the most successful UH yet. Certainly the most commented on! Also first time I think the UH replies have outnumbered the RP replies. :)

I'm surprised no one's really mentioned that Majel Barrett photo though!

Well, it is a special edition. It's natural that it gets special treatment.;)

I hadn't even recognized her in that one! Beautiful photo.:bolian:

These are great and all but am I the only one to be slightly disappointed that this wasn't an updated version of the blooper reel of the same name that went out at the last anniversary?

Amid all the song and dance made about the lack of Trek Bloopers that clip proved they're out there...somewhere ;)

...HUH?

I'm confused. What does some blooper reel have to do with anything in this thread??
