UK BBSers: From Russia with SNOW....

This snow

That's what we refer to in New England as a "dusting".

A good 7 or more inches in the gardens.

But that's a bit more substantial.

My question is: are they putting down sand on the roads, or only salt? I've seen reference to "gritters", but I'm not sure how to translate that from British.

In the DC area they appear to use salt exclusively. In Vermont they use sand exclusively. It's quite plain which is more effective, yet for some reason DC hasn't clued in.....

I'm meant to be having a driving lesson in an hour and a half. Am assuming it's still on seeing as my instructor hasn't called/texted to let me know otherwise...

I walked home last night, and thankfully they had already gritted some of the pathways on the main road in advance, before the snow came (none at all on the side roads)... nowhere near adequately though.... it appeared to definitely be a mix of something, neither just salt on it's own, nor just sand.

They just shoveled it in large piles, leaving it in heaps in places, with other areas entirely uncovered. So you were effectively taking 5 steps with nothing, then stepping over large useless piles every so often... what a joke!

I heard a swallow had survived the winter in Cornwall for the first time ever, but I don't fancy his chances now...

Depends where in Cornwall they are I guess, this cold snap is not as bad as the last one, but then I am on the Lizard, it's a lot colder in North and East Cornwall.

That siad, the sky has suddenly gone black, and I am told that snow is on it's way. I hope it doesn't stick or I won't be able to ride home. Motorbikes and snow really don't mix too well.

I guess the weather varies in different parts of the country. If it's clear now, it may not stay like that in the next few hours...

I heard on the local news that you should definitely not drive if you can avoid it. Some people had to sleep in their cars last night due to stranding. And there have been loads of accidents due to slipping and sliding. The thing is, if you have a problem, you likely won't get rescued any time soon as the road side help agencies are so busy!

Take blankets and supplies just in case if you really do have to go out!

Just click the insert image button (looks like a picture of a mountain) and then paste in the URL.

My cat refused to go out this morning, just turned and ran back in to the house. Last time it snowed though he was running around in it, then when he got to any melted patches he would jump over them to stay in the snow.
:techman:

Last night was a perfect chocolate box scene, light snow, coverage of about 3 inches, a wide undisturbed patch between my flat and the copse and in the eerie half light my cat, Squeaky, who at 9pm couldn't keep his legs crossed any longer, squatted slap bang in the middle of this beautiful scene and did what he had too! Such an indignant look on his face too :)

My driving lesson was cancelled due to the snow, it's settling on the roads again!

6 inches is enough to freak out about over there?

Eh, I suppose DC would as well. There were snow days at many local schools when we got three inches last week.

It all seems a bit ridiculous to a New Englander though.

My son was very excited at the prospect of a 'snow day', his face when he remembered that he goes to a boarding school was priceless:guffaw:
That's another reason why he hates me:lol:

Stopped snowing here for a bit, still barely past the level of a 'dusting' (thanks Lindley ;) ). Hopefully we'll get something more substantial this evening, It'll be very anticlimatic if this is it.
