To the few saying uhura was underused I would say you are kind of all wrong and please remember that this film was shot immediately after zoe saldana gave birth to twins and was still breast feeding. Saldana even talked about the challenge of filming trek 3 and being a new mother.
This is my favourite version of Nu uhura, no more teenage angst love spat on the way to a mission like STID. she was such a great officer and was about the mission .
I did not even see the hint of when she and spock got back together which used to be one of the criticism of her character .... about her being just the girlfriend and nothing more.
She gave her life up for Kirk (best moment of her character)
She stood up to Krall more than once
She saves Spock in the end
She kicked some ass
In this age of blockbusters where females are overpowered to the point of mary sue perfection or just damsels in distress. ST Beyond gave us the best balance of modern female heroines with Uhura and Jaylah.
