UFO (the show about SHADO) adaptation in the works...

I hope this hasn't been posted before.

It looks like UFO is finally going to be made into a film; of course, whether or not it'll be good....

Anywho, here is the link to an article on joblo.com. Ali Larter and Joshua Jackson seem to be in the running for parts.

It was probably a matter of time, though I hope they manage to maintain the spirit of the original show, otherwise it'll just come off as either a Threshold (which I'm convinced was based on UFO to begin with) or V clone. The article makes it sound like Jackson is up for the role of Ed Straker, but it sounds more like he's playing Paul Foster - and come to think of it he rather resembles Michael Billington, too. They should have an older actor as Straker - Mark Harmon would be my first choice.

Back to my original point, they'll do OK if they remember to honor the original. If they hire people with no clue about the original series (such was the case when Jonathan Frakes directed Thunderbirds) it'll have problems.

There's some more about this here:

Some points of interest:
They are planning three films, the first script is ready and the next two are in 'treatment'.

They intend to take it seriously. Quote “UFO is not a spoof, or a parody or a kids' movie. It's a pretty dark story, actually…it is not a show for young children.”
Also “My biggest goal for this is firstly to not alienate the fans of the original show.”

Joshua Jackson is in the running for Paul Foster. Ali Larter has been in talks for Col. Virginia Lake. Other roles have either not yet been cast or are being kept secret for know. There are four actresses under consideration for Lt. Gay Ellis.

Although the film is set all round the world SHADO HQ is still in Britain.

We discussed it in my UFO review thread quite a bit... and yes, a new one will be out before long... :D

Is it too much to hope that it will be set in a retro-futuristic 1980?

Dammit. Ah, well. :D

Still, I hope it'll be worth a watch!

Woot! It'll be interesting to see how a new take on this bit of the Anderson legacy on the big screen! Glad they're not gonna pull a Will Ferrell on us!

Honestly, the only thing I remember about that show was that the actors looked more plastic than the vehicle models. That, and the cheezy names for said vehicles. SkyDiver! It splits in two! The plane is called Sky, the submarine is Diver! HAW!

yes it was cheesy. yes it was campy. yes it was too british. that being said, when i watched it back in the day, it was still pretty cool

There was at least one episode where Col. Lake wore a purple wig on Moonbase.

Actually, everybody apparently wore some form of wig on that show. The whole purple wig idea may look campy today, but it was actually a legitimate, seriously intended prediction of how fashions and other aspects of culture were possibly to be in 1980. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson believed that wigs would be a common piece of apparel for both men and women. As such virtually every male actor on the show was actually wearing a wig in most episodes, too. In the cast of Michael Billington (Foster), you can tell what episodes he didn't wear a wig in because he was going the Sean Connery route and it showed in several episodes. For Ed Bishop it was more a practical matter - they tried dying his hair for a few episodes but apparently it caused him some problems, so he wigged it for the rest of the series.

All that said, if you watch the first episode it was pretty clear Anderson was going for the eye candy effect with regards to Lt. Ellis and the others on Moonbase. Not to mention the long shot of Ayshea Brough's butt early in the episode (say that fast 5 times!).
