U.S. soldiers find iPod a useful tool in Iraq

Who would have thought a miniature HDD with a touchscreen interface could be so damn useful?

Apple should use this story in their adverts. It would appeal to the people who think owning an Apple product automatically makes you a hippie/trend follower/douchebag.

I use my iPhone much in the same way, now as a civilian of course. Not really a rugged combat device though. Rain, dust, don't drop it. And there are security issues.

But it's cool they are using them for general informational use.

The article claimed there hasn't been a single device over there that has been hacked. I find that a little difficult to believe. I'm kinda worried about a civilian device being better than the military equivalents. That dog just don't take to pettin', son. [/disapprovingofmilitarybureaucracy]

^^^

The Tricorder as a standard piece of military kit (albeit with a different name) is likely in the new ten years, even if this doesn't come pretty close anyway.

Bringing gadgetry into one small easily controlled device just plain makes sense.

there are people here in the US who have hacked these devices to hell. I did it myself (following instructions) back before there was an App store. I think that just proves that Insurgents don't have good computer people on tap

I remember that story from a few months ago.

^^^assuming the article was correct in its claims.

Also assuming they haven't upgraded the field models with military-grade encryption.

I hate to say this but this is an impression that Apple has proudly created for themselves and has continued to perpetuate. As much as I love my iPhone (which is also primarily marketed to the same demographic), I'll never invest in a Mac simply because of the condescending "I'm a PC/I'm a Mac" campaign. Indeed, Apple has done a fantastic job of alienating the largest percentage of the consumer market all on their own.

As far as Apple trying to dispel that perception, why would they when they've so carefully crafted it? Apple products are for hip twenty-somethings and teens whereas anything else is for out-of-touch, technologically-retarded old farts like myself (I'm 33, BTW). It would be pretty antithetical to their overall marketing strategy to embrace this in their advertising.

There was a collossal frak-up on Apple's part. Which idiot at the apps store thought that would go down well? :wtf:

I don't know but, it was still LOLlerific in an overly sardonic way.

Which is why I don't want a Mac, besides the higher costs, dirth of software (particularly games and Multimedia tools), aftermarket accessories, et al.
