U.S.S. QUEST NCC-80053 Blueprint/Layout Project

ancient

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Up Until now the vast majority of my detailed work has been of the Pre-Tos variety. The reasons are simple:

-Smaller.
-More basic shapes.
-Virgin territory canon-wise.
-Less fancy schmancy technology.

But now I've decided to try to prove myself not to be a one-trick pony and do a TNG ship, much in the same way as my ESS AACHEN. (plug plug plug)
A few of you may recall a week or so ago I posted this thing:

There are some important differences between this ship and the one I'll be doing:

-The ship will be only half as big as I've shown it. I decided to go for a smaller ship more like the VGR size. Therefore the ship will have 12 decks rather than 24. Aside from being easier to handle, It'll help make it different from the Sovereign.
-As such, the dual deflectors and some other features will be changed or replaced to bring the ship more into line with its new scale.
Some prelim work: Top/port and bottom/port

It is usually my habit to wait until I'm pretty much finished until I start sharing stuff, but not this time! This time there will be work in progress!
Hopefully this will mean a little imput. Since this is my first TNG ship I'm going to need help remembering little things like Holodecks and other TNG features.

A preview of possible bridge layouts & officer quarters:

The colors are hopefully more TNGish.

Since this sucker is almost 900 feet long I've downsized to half the scale I used for the AACHEN. It's still pretty big though.

Let me guess..the Quest is named after a 20th Century Scientist who ran all over the globe having fantastic adventures with his Son,a Ward from India and his large personal Bodyguard.

Dang, these complex curves are tricky.

Well, that's just the sort of intellectual juggernaught a Starfleet ship would be named for, am I right?

Yep..you know even though I was just joking around..in the Greg Cox's Eugenics Wars books there is a cameo by Hadji so having a Starship named QUEST may not be too far off the mark.

BTW..Cool ship.:techman:

I loved the Aachen, so i'm really looking forward to seeing these one's when they are done, good luck and all the best.

Taking shape now:

The back of the saucer gave me some grief but I think I finally got it to make sense in 3D. Had to change a few things though. I think these blueprints (redprints?) are coming out pretty good. I wasn't sure at first.

A test of the interior:

The deck 1 diagram is just a rough image, not a final layout. I'm testing proper shapes & colors. Plus I want to make sure everything'll fit, which seems to be working out ok.

Thanks for the comments!

just wonderin, how long do you reckon it'll take you to complete it

Good question. I've never done a ship like this, so I really can't say. I'm not really on a schedule. The AACHEN took about a month. Then again, this ship is three times bigger.

Right now updates are coming pretty fast, but my pace will probably vary a bit.

There is now an aft view along with the front:

I've started a rough layout of the interior in the form of a cutaway:

The shape of the nacelle pylons is still under one-man debate. They don't match at all as originally drawn, so I'll have to decide which view to alter.

Here is where the ship stands now:

The nacelles/pylons are coming together fairly well. Once I've finished with these red-line drawings I'll go over them with better res final black line & color.

I've done a little more cutaway work:

Kind of resembles a pint-sized hybrid of the Galaxy (secondary hull) and Sovereign (primary hull) to me. Good work all the same!

A very interesting design choice. I love it through. A cross b/w Galaxy and Sovereign classes. Can't wait to see more work on this.

That's an awesome design!

I was counting the decks there...I counted 13 but looking at the side vew of the ship (and top view), I counted 27 or 28 decks. Are you going to do a bottom view?

I don't really count that very bottom deck as a deck, so that's why I said 12. Now that I look at it though, it does seem bigger than I thought it was.

I'm going to do all six views. I posted the beginning of a bottom view upthread.

More updates soon...

I have been doing little, not-so interesting detail work on getting the views to match, which is one of the reasons I haven't been posting more stuff. It's fairly bland stuff, especially if you ain't the one doing it. ;)

This is where the ship itself stands: Final pylon and nacelle shapes, some more detailing on the saucer, a thicker neck, and so forth:

To keep myself interested, I also have completed a larger-scale final bridge layout:

questbridgefinalyx2.png

I tried to stay within the design ethic of the Andy Probert & Rick Sternbach TNG, so I based this mostly on the Generations bridge, which is, imo, one of the most beautiful Enterprise sets we ever got. I'll also be basing my internal doohickies on Rick's ENT-D blueprint symbols. They won't be the same, but hopefully will have the same 'flavor'.

Here is a slightly more primitive B&W version:

questbridgeblackandwhitdd3.png

This was built the same basic way I'm building the exterior views, but slightly more steps:

1. Pencil drawing.
2. Small computer drawing
3. Careful pencil diagram with proper measurements
4. Red-line computer blueprint based on (3)
5. Black-line layor
6. Clone of black line layer undernath with color
7. "wall-line" layer for the thick outline.

Here is the dirty red-line version with all sorts of stuff on it. This is how these drawings all look 90% of the time when I'm working on them:

questbridgedl2.png

I've also done work on the cutaway, but nothing earth-shattering on that front.

I would recommend changing the shape of the nacelle pylons.

Use the design from the Galaxy class.

90 degree turn upwards.

HOLY (SELF-CENSORED EXPLETIVES), this is a sweet design!!! I could see a tri-nacelle "A.G.T." version, though. But all-in-all, she's a sweet TNG relaunch vessel!

I just love this... all of it. The ship looks great, and that Bridge... omg... please do not change a thing about it...; it looks PERFECT as-is... it is big, functional, simple, and very TNG... This is great work, and I look forward to the progress of the project.
