U.S.S. Lakota - Lakota Class Starship

Height = 55.05m

Commissioned in 2412, the Lakota class starship was designed to act as a heavy destroyer. Smaller than the Sovereign class, but able to pack just as big a punch, the Lakota is cheaper to produce in large numbers and comes equipped with Type XIV phasers, regenerative shielding, ablative armor (over key areas) and quantum torpedoes . After it's testing phase with the Aventine class, the Quantum Slipstream Drive has now been perfected and is installed on the Lakota as standard. This multi-role ship can also act as a long range explorer and is equipped with a modular sensor package (4 of each are located on the lateral edge of the saucer section) that can easily be pulled out and swapped over for specific missions, or simply to receive further upgrades with ease. There are plans to be able to insert, not only sensor packages but also portable weapons platforms into these modules. Two current variants of these platforms would be retractable micro torpedo launchers and rotational pulse phaser cannons, both of which are still in the testing phase. The first ship-of-the-class is named after the U.S.S. Lakota, which gained notoriety after being one of the few Federation ships ever to fire upon another. *That ship later went on to survive the Dominion War and was later destroyed after serving with distinction during the Iconian War. Whilst the Lakota's design still holds true to Starfleet's aim of peaceful exploration, it reflects the more contemporary attitude that deep space exploration vehicles need to be better able to defend themselves against ever more advanced and aggressive species.

Design notes:

This design is heavily based upon a concept sketch from the great John Eaves, which would later be coined as the 'Eaves class starship'. Using this as a basic template, I added similar modifications that Eaves added to the Excelsior class to turn it into the Enterprise-B (the flared secondary hull, modular impulse engines and warp fins). The elements have been updated to make the vessel look more contemporary. As the ship is equipped with a Quantum Slipstream Drive, I have added Slipstream sensors, much like those of the USS Dauntless, (NX-01-A) which are the small glowing protrusions on the aft of the secondary hull. I named the ship after the infamous USS Lakota, which featured in DS9's fourth season episode, 'Paradise Lost'.

*Not strictly canon information, but made up to suit the background info for the design.

Two things, but first- it looks great for the most part.

That thing by the upper part of the deflector looks weird. Also, it looks like a mix of the Ambassador, Galaxy and Sovereign. It kinda looks lie an interprid contemporary. As for the nacelles- lose the fins :)

^ I agree on the weird Main Dish shape.

Not sure I agree on the fins; I think they give the Lakota-A a kind of retro-TMP look. I'm not so fond of the nacelle side-grilles. I would like to see anew kind of post-TNG wrap-around grille for the nacelles; like Enterprise-B, but somehow thinner and more "advanced"-looking. The wing-like nacelle pylons seem too thin and swoopy for a "destroyer" in my mind. The TMP-style assembly around the lower saucer dome seems out of time here if this is a post-TNG design.

I like the glowing saucer-domes, the Enterprise-B-style protrusion that frames the Main Dish, and the overall shapes of the saucer and secondary hull.

A suggestion for the Main dish: carve out the area immediately above the Dish so that the Dish would be a rounder, fuller oval and be more easily removable a la the Borg jettison seen in FIRST CONTACT. I think it would actually make the ship's bow look more interesting.

If you want to classify this craft as a "destroyer", that makes it seem like it would be the big brother to the Defiant-class escort. If that's the case, maybe a more radical nacelle design would be in order. The overall cigar-style shape would be okay, but try borrowing some design cues from Defiant; nacelles protected by a limited application of ablative armor, with smaller apertures at the bow and stern of each nacelle for the glowy bits.

I really do like the overall design, and the detailing that needs work (in my opinion) has been covered.

What I would like to add is, texturing. You're using aztecing on some areas, while other areas look as if they have no textures at all. Parts of the secondary hull, the nacelles. It looks as if the model is unfinished.

Yeah I'll take that. I do struggle with texture mapping. I managed to get a good STO texture that they use on a lot of their ships but trying to get it to fit on the ship is beyond me. I need the straight lines of the panels to be able to curve around the edge of the saucer, for example. Simply projecting it onto the model directly would just give it the effect of having loads of horizontal lines across it. Do you know of any good sketchup/ texture tutorials?

Thanks for the kind comments guys. It's nice to know there are some fans out there! Okey, so I've been playing around with the textures a bit, the new skin is more akin to something found on STO... Also I've been working on the deflector dish. It's now slightly recessed with more of a rim around the glowing section. Just wanted to give less of an impression that the protruding hull was intersecting it, more that the dish was moulded around it. That view will be available once the render is done. For now, a shot of the upper section with it's new ablative armour!
