U.S.S. Enterprise, an on-screen reference

Welcome back to Tallguy's TOS Enterprise catalog where it's all Enterprise all the time!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'll reply after the goodies.

Sorry I wasn't able to post yesterday. But today you get it ALLLLLLLL!

Here is the great grand-daddy of Enterprise shots. It is my intention to eventually edit this all together into a single shot.

Turn To Bridge (Metamorphosis - Let That Be Your Last Battlefield) [16] - A long turn that begins behind the ship and eventually ends foward above the saucer, focused on the bridge. This is a LONG shot that was used played both forwards and backwards. It was never played in it's entirety but broken into many shots. Used in the "next week's voyage" shot. First new shot of Season 2!

More season 2....

Bow (Metamorphosis) [1] - View from forward and above. Nice nacelle lights. Only used once!

Constellation Discover (The Doomsday Machine - The Ultimate Computer) [8] - AMT kit. The wrecked Constellation first seen on the bridge screen. Also used in exterior composites.

Constellation Wreck (The Doomsday Machine) [3] - AMT kit. Above shot of the Constellation.

Sec Hull (The Doomsday Machine - The Tholian Web) [6] - An above shot looking down through the nacelles (first used with the Constellation). The full shot tracks in past the saucer.

Con 3/4 (The Doomsday Machine) [1] - AMT kit. An above shot, seen with the Enterprise.

Profile (The Doomsday Machine - Journey to Babel) [10] - Side shot of the Enterprise. The element is moved optically through the frame, this is not a camera move. Too bad, really. This could have finally been the production equivalent of WMN Side.

Ah, the wee little Enterprises...

Little Ent (The Doomsday Machine) [8] - AMT kit? Little Enterprise first seen being abused by the Doomsday Machine. Not sure what model this is.

Little Con (The Doomsday Machine) [2] - AMT kit. Little Constellation flying left to right.

Little Con RL (The Doomsday Machine) [5] - Little Constellation flying right to left. Not flopped, this is a separate shot. You can see the asymetrical damage to the ship.

Con Aft (The Doomsday Machine) [4] - Aft view of the Constellation before she meets her noble end.

WNM Side RL (Mirror, Mirror) [1] - The pilot ship returns as the crew falls into the Mirror Universe. A previously unused shot of the pilot ship going right to left. They flipped the decals and everything, and this is the only time it is seen!

Station Approach (The Trouble With Tribbles - The Ultimate Computer) [2] - AMT kit. Aft view between the nacelles. Only ever used with K7 element. Check out the lighting cable on the connecting dorsal!

K7 Far (The Trouble With Tribbles) [5] - AMT kit. Ship orbits the far side of K7.

K7 Near (The Trouble With Tribbles) [4] - Ship orbits the near side of K7. Appears to be the 11 footer. Might be a still (no blinking).

Yep, this here is the good stuff...

Station Depart (The Trouble With Tribbles - The Tholian Web) [18] - Gorgeous shot off the bow. Became one of the "standards".

Phaser2 (Journey to Babel - Turnabout Intruder) [17] - A new "weapons" shot. The famous "The Making of Star Trek" shot.

Saucer Top (The Gamesters of Triskelion - Let That Be Your Last Battlefield) [4] - The camera travels in on the B/C Deck.

Have ye ever seen so much pretty all in the same place?

Aft (The Gamesters of Triskelion - All Our Yesterdays) [33] - Tail shot of the ship. Came to largely replace Over Nacelle.

Under Saucer (The Immunity Syndrome - The Lights of Zetar) [3] - A slow shot from under the saucer looking aft.

Whoosh Away (By Any Other Name - That Which Survives) [6] - The 3 foot model races away. Not the same as the shot from The Cage. Used in season two and three titles.

This unit must survive!

Approach2 (The Ultimate Computer - All Our Yesterdays) [33] - A new approach that shows off the nacelles better and approaches the camera slower. Used for the Federation Fleet formation shots. Introduced late but this shot became a standard in season three.

That wraps up season two! There are only two more shots to go! (Plus some surprise bonus material!)

And here are the episodes:

Ok, here's one of my sticking points. I CANNOT believe that the shot from The Enterprise Incident was filmed just for season three. As I say below, it looks really really close to Saucer Top. Does anyone have any magical way to confirm this? And kind of the same for the next shot, too. There's no doubt it's a whole new shot, but I suspect they discovered a shot they shot in season two but didn't use. Since out of all of the season three episodes there are only two new shots, even with FX heavy eps like Tholian Web and Elaan of Troyius, I am highly skeptical of the idea that they would have dragged the old girl out of storage just for them. Ideas?

Surrounded
(The Enterprise Incident) [6] - Far away shot, used in the shot of being surrounded by Romulans. A still shot (nacelle lights don't move). I still think this is part of another shot, but I can't prove it... Yet. I have my suspicions that this is the unseen beginning of Saucer Top.

Lower Sensor
(That Which Survives - Let That Be Your Last Battlefield) [2] - The last new shot of the series! A track in that ends with a close up of the lower sensor dome on the saucer. While not used until season three, I suspect it was filmed in season two. Never seen "clear". In That Which Survives it has a "shake" effect and in Let That Be Your Last Battlefield it has titles.

And that's it! That's ALL of the shots of the Enterprise from Star Trek. Ever.

Oh, there is ONE more thing...

GUNS!

It's kind of remarkable (to me) that they took so long to find their way for the "proper" phaser effect. And (IMHO) when they found to best photon torpedo effect they then went with something else.

Collection of Weapons Fire and FX:

Phasers:

The Corbomite Maneuver

Arena

Balance of Terror / Errand of Mercy

The Alternative Factor

Who Mourns for Adonais / The Apple / Whom Gods Destroy

The Doomsday Machine

Journey to Babel / Obsession / Patterns of Force / The Ultimate Computer / Paradise Syndrome / The Tholian Web / For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky / Day of the Dove / The Lights of Zetar

Journey to Babel

More guns! (The Changeling / Journey to Babel version of the torpedoes was the best, I think.)

The Ultimate Computer / Elaan of Troyius

Weapons Strikes:

Errand of Mercy / The Deadly Years / Journey to Babel

Thank you all, you've been a lovely audience. I'll be interested to hear if anyone comes up with any stunning new insights as a result of this. At some point I'll have this compiled into video. I just need to find the "definitive" version of each shot.

Coming Soon...

File

As I mentioned the other day, great work. This is an excellent resource. After looking over the remastered shots the past year, it's cool to come back and realize how good these original images are. And there's actually more of them than I'd previously thought. Thanks for all this.

Mark
It's been interesting to see what a solid base they laid down with enough stock to get them through the first season, followed by "filling in the gaps" in season two. They also went for more dramatic shots in two, I think.

It has been a great relief to finish this tinged with the realization that I'll have to do it again when I get TOS on Blu Ray. :)

I'm impressed. Interesting project. I was wondering if a compliation has been done showing the original shots vs the new fx-remastered shots. I know trekmovie.com did articles on the different episodes but they are not in one convenient indexed place like this analysis is. Anyone considered a definitive old vs new shot comparison?
This project underlines a great challenge that the Remastered team faced. Should they just re-do these 62 shots and insert them as appropriate? Or should they take a more modern sensibility where a new episode gets a new shot. But really, how many ways can the Enterprise fly past the camera? (And now we know: Six. :) )

TrekMovie posted comparison video up on YouTube, I think. That's the sort of project that I'm interested enough to see someone else do, but not interested enough to do myself. (Same goes for the Galaxy Class, before someone asks.)

The Star Trek Compendium by Allan Asherman lists which FX house did which episode (and maybe Memory Alpha does too, though I'm not certain), so you could probably figure it out from the debut episode of each shot.

EDIT: And oh yeah, I forgot to say, this is a terrific resource -- thanks for putting it together. I do hope it ends up on a permanent site.
That's an interesting notion. I'll have to check it out.

I'm glad you like it. I have hopes for finding it a permanent home.

But to complicate matters further, I'm pretty sure elements were shared between houses in times of crunchNcrisis, so you might see an E element shot by Anderson reemployed by VanDerVeer for an episode credited to the latter ... and maybe that got messed with by printing it with cyan or simply by a different process (there was aerial image printing as well as more traditional optical printing, and I suppose in a pinch you could do some downNdirty contact printing though you'd wind up with a flopped image.)

This is an insanely wonderful undertaking, and I'm just as impressed with the enthusiastic response to it as I am the effort involved in creating such a resource. Kudos!

Also ... if the original film elements ever turned up, this could be a useful resource for a future alternate HD Trek, where the original elements would be recomped in a cleaner fashion ... we could get TOS Trek that didn't resort to the different color and density values that (for me) mar the tos-R stuff to the point of unwatchability.
Thanks. Yes, this is the sort of nuts and bolts production knowledge I just don't have. I had to wonder, did it cost money to use a ready to go stock shot? I was curious because The Menagerie part II and Turnabout Intruder (two notoriously cash strapped eps) don't even use stock shots!

I did notice that a perfectly servicable tried and true shot like Tilted Approach would suddenly look pretty ragged for a few episodes, but then spring back better than ever.

This is utterly fantastic, I hope it gets featured at some site for all its hard work!

It shows my Trek geekness that I recognized those shots with a smile!
A was walking past the Art Asylum Enterprise I have in the box the other day and mentally ticked off my names for all of the shots on the box. It's a sickness, I tell ya.

OH! It's not the permanent website I'm hoping for, but the whole deal can be found in these two documents here and here:
http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AfGjMA5KY3SOZGZuZnc4Yl85Z3R2M2NkZzU&hl=en
http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AfGjMA5KY3SOZGZuZnc4Yl81aGJwbTk1Z2M&hl=en

The "Metamorphosis" Bow shot is a great one -- it's a shame it was only used once.

What might be nice to have is an index organized the other way around -- list each shot, then list every episode it appeared in (ideally with a context description or time stamp).

Glad you're doing TAS too. I think most of the Enterprise shots there, at least the ones where there's actually 3-D movement, are rotoscoped from TOS elements. And the stills are probably traced from or at least inspired by specific shots too. I hope you'll match the animated versions to their TOS counterparts.

FYI, I will be hosting this great reference material on my Trekplace web site later this year -- probably around June or July. I'm working full-time and attending MBA courses part-time, so I have even less of a life than usual right now. :guffaw::lol:

Thanks again, Tallguy, for all your hard work!

Ah, the wee little Enterprises...

Little Ent (The Doomsday Machine) [8] - AMT kit? Little Enterprise first seen being abused by the Doomsday Machine. Not sure what model this is.

I think this might be the first ever Enterprise model, the 4 inch balsa and cardboard one that was whipped up right after Gene R. approved the design. Remember the story about how it was originally hung upside down by a string? Look at how vertical the saucer support pylon is, and the strange looking underside of the saucer, and all the other proportions and shapes are off.

You can get a real good look at it by maximizing the last photo above.

I thought the tiny one was lost very early on, but maybe ... ?

The underside of the saucer looks wrong, yeah, but that could be due to bad lighting ... especially if that is just a still photo ship cutout (no perspective change in the scene I think, so that is likely.) The transparency and lack of perspective change on the planet-killer in most shots also suggests still-photo or slide work rather than motion picture filmed elements. If anything, the shots that leap out as different or odder-looking are the burned model kit-looking shots of the Constellation, which have got very unsteady movement. It'd be interesting to check to see who did the vfx for the ep ... doubt it was Anderson's company and would bet money it wasn't Dunn's.

According to the episode credits and the first edition of The Star Trek Compendium, the effects for "The Doomsday Machine" were by Cinema Research Corporation. They also did "Miri," "The Gamesters of Triskelion," "Is There in Truth No Beauty," "Wink of an Eye," and "The Cloud Minders" (and maybe a few others, since the STC doesn't list FX credits for every episode).

Hmm, not shows with new spaceship or much model stuff, just planetspheres. CinemaResearch was a really solid optical compositing place in the late 70s and much later, doing light object on light background matting for DreamQuest early on that was really really good for its time in BLUE THUNDER and others. There's a TREK-TOS-heavy CFQ from the mid or late 90s with a really extensive vfx article quoting from Datin and several of the surviving vfx guys, but I don't think DOOMSDAY is mentioned. I'll try to look for it this week though.
