Typhon Pact (potential spoilers)

PKS8304

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Just finished reading Paths of Disharmony.

I have to say that of the four, I probably enjoyed Seize the Fire the most. I say this because it was not only a fun and exciting chapter of the Typhon Pact story but the next Titan novel by its own right (and I cant wait to see where they go with Tuvok after this!)

That said, Im not saying I didnt enjoy the other 3 but with Zero Sum Game and Rough Beasts of Empire I felt like I really needed to have been reading DS9 for the last decade. When I got out of reading, I had read Avatar Book 1 and 2, the Section 31 and Gateway books. I bought a copy of Gamma by DRG3 but havent read it because I like to have all the parts in a set.
They were enjoyable stories I just wish I had a better understanding of the DS9 universe they take place in.

Paths of Disharmony should have been my favorite being more TNG oriented than the rest (which is my fav series) yet again, while I didnt get lost in reading it, I might have appreciated it better if I even knew what Vanguard was, but up until the book slid into referencing that series and I had to look it up I had never heard of it.

I dont have negative things to say about any of the books, but its become clear to me that I have alot of ground to catch up on with Star Trek books.

Wow. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I believe you are the first person I've heard of who enjoyed 'Seize the Fire' the most. Though I do agree with that ZSM and RBE are not very friendly to anyone who hasn't been following at least a good portion of the DS9-relaunch

That wouldn't really have helped much. There's a big jump forward in time between the last prior DS9 novel (The Soul Key) and RBoE, about four years' worth of stuff that remains unchronicled aside from what RBoE and ZSG mentioned.

I see what your saying, but when I stopped reading DS9, Jake had taken a shuttle and gone looking for his dad. I didnt know when and how Sisko had returned and though going into this that maybe this was the book it happened in.

Its not really a big deal just slightly distracting when reading.
Like with Paths of Disharmony, knowing what happened in the Vanguard series actually plays a large part in the overall plot.
That said, the writer did allow new readers to be guided to that information by making characters like the President unaware of the details as well so that you find them out with her.

Like I said, while I intend to continue to pick up current trek, I think I need to backtrack and read some of the older stuff before I dive back into current material.

TNG, Titan and New Frontier I feel caugh up on. DS9 there is some ground, and Voyager, I havent even touched, I was made aware of HUGE developments in those characters lives while reading the Destiny trilogy that left me going, wow when did that happen???

Sisko returns in Unity, but you should read the Mission: Gamma books before that. The Worlds of DS9: Bajor and Trill novel would also be good. I haven't read any of the DS9 relaunch past David Mack's Warpath, and I was fine. Like Christopher mentioned, there's a big gap between the last DS9 books and Typhon Pact.

Yeah, I couldn't even finish Seize the Fire, and that's rare for me. I just couldn't get into it at all, which was disappointing.

Of the Typhon Pact as a whole (so far), I would have to say that I liked Paths of Disharmony the most, followed by Zero Sum Game, Rough Beasts of Empire and then StF. Time will tell where Christopher's upcoming e-book entry will rank.

I preferres RBOE and POD, in that order. Didn't care much for the others...

Seize The Fire is one my nightstand, halfway trough, and will probably remain so for a while.

I'm one of the fans of RBoE, feeling that DRGIII did a great job with Sisko. I can fully understand how and why Sisko reacted to the situation he was in.

Zero Sum Game was a very cool read, but my biggest issue was that Bashir didn't always feel like Bashir.

Paths Of Disharmony, I think I need to read again. I'm just not sure what to think about it yet.

I read all the Typhon pact books Zero Sum game was the best of the series I didn't care for the rest of the book series all that much .after I read them the storylines seem to be too repeative uninteresting It was really slow going to try and finish reading the rest of the books. My apologies to the authors I just wish we could have some more standalone novels for TNG and ds9 to wrap up unfinished storylines that were skipped for the 5 year time jump..

I'm about 1/3 of the way into PoD, and I'm loving it. But then again, I seem to be one of the biggest fans of the current Next Gen crew on the boards, and I'm also a huge fan of the Andorians (though, not as much as Therin), and I've really liked everything else I've read by Dayton Ward. So it was pretty much guaranteed that I'd love it.

Haven't read any of the Typhon Pact books yet, but my interest in Trek lit has recently been renewed, so I'm thinking of checking them out. I like the idea of a Trek-style Cold War; at least, that's how the whole Khitomer Accords vs. Typhon Pact thing sounds to me. Of course, I'm sure the resemblance is not that overt.

I should probably start with the Destiny trilogy before I dig into the Typhon Pact series, though...

See, that's the weird thing for me. I also love this crew from the novels, I love Andorians, Dayton Ward wrote some of my favorite novels. But this one, somehow felt off. But, then again, I read it in a period where I was rapidly reading Trek novels to catch up. Perhaps I should give another go.

Spoilers ahead....

I wasn't impressed by Paths of Disharmony. It seemed padded out with repetivitve action sequences and irrelevent scenes like the stuff about Picard's flute.
I haven't read the Vanguard books yet, but I didn't find the vague refrences back offputting at all.

I loved Rough Beasts of Empire. The ongoing post-Nemesis Romulan arc has been my favourite in Treklit. I almost cheered aloud when Spock confronted Praetor Tel'Aura and got his reunification movement decriminalized.
Sisko's arc didn't bother me. Yes, he left his family for stupid non-reasons, but he was prone to OTT self pity during the series. It's in-character, IMO.
The worst I can say is that Sisko's Tzenkethi War flashbacks seemed tacked on and pointless.

I haven't read Zero Sum Game or Seize the Fire yet.

I liked all of the stuff with Picard's flute myself. Sure it didn't have a huge impact on the Andorian story, but it I've thought so far it's given us some good character stuff.
