Genesis was probably more finicky than a nuke and easier to set off.
Now Styles (Starfleet’s Dukat) would have ordered a bridge hit and Genesis never would have been armed.
Kirk’s humanity in not raising shields as Reliant closed was only the first mistake…not killing everything on Reliant was the second.
The transporter wouldn’t work on the Genesis torpedo, but he could have beamed the air out or something. Total destruction of Reliant wasn’t needed.
Now, had Kirk raised shields in time, Khan might have headed for Earth with the torpedo and Enterprise behind.
Excelsior’s captain is the hero now.
That might have been a worse situation.
Into Darkness’s Khan headed for Starfleet.
82’s Khan I see hitting Spacedock perhaps. The whale probe shows—and no one is ready.
As it happened, only Reliant and Enterprise were at risk.
Khan runs? Who knows?
Maybe Khan defects to the Klingons—and he and Kruge team up. So…who has the Genesis device now?
Another no-win scenario for the Academy to study.
