Two Suns

Well, Orvan is the second planet orbiting ZR2... there are 5 planets in ZR2's orbit... the first rocky world, which is like Venus, in environment, Orvan, another rocky world that is the SIZE of Venus, but is like a reverse-Venus... instead of being unbearably inhospitable heat-wise, it is unbearably inhospitable cold-wise, with just as many toxic gasses and gravity in the atmosphere. The last two are gas giants.

ZR1 in the story hosts 7 planets, all but the first one rocky. The first planet orbiting ZR1 is a gas giant.

Orvan is the ONLY world in the system with life other than bacteria.

Would a binary system have an asteroid belt, or would the two stars have long since drawn in any extra material?

ZR1 and ZR2 are so very far apart that they are going to have very little effect on each other's solar systems. The sentiment right now is that you get asteroid belts in orbits that are perturbed by gas giants. Of course, we have a sample of 1 to consider at the moment :)

Based on that, ZR2 could have an asteroid belt and ZR1 wouldn't be likely to have one.
