Two Kelvin Timeline Art Books This Fall

Looks like these were posted at exactly the same time (same timestamp, anyway) so I've merged the two.

I'm down for both for sure. They'll be welcome additions to the bookshelf. :)

I'll wait to see what it's like - hoping for some designs of the Bridge, and the Franklin

received star trek beyond: the makeup artistry of joel harlow yesterday.

one of the interesting revelations (to me) was that a klingon was initially supposed to be included in the group of marauders that attacks scotty. they started to sculpt him based on neville page's into darkness klingons (complete with pierced ears and blinged out ridges). i'm kind of bummed the klingon was dumped in favor of a new alien, it would've been nice connective tissue to the previous film and the franchise writ large.

and i think the kelvin timeline klingons are superior to page's more exaggerated take in discovery.

I believe the Klingons originally had hair as well but it was finally left out because the wig kept coming off with the helmet.

We did see photos of hair being applied in Klingon make-up tests for the 2009 movie. I don't know that any of that look ended up being filmed for the Klingon scenes which were ultimately omitted from the final cut.

Edit:
Oops, I was misremembering. The hair seen being applied in photos was for eyebrows only. The Klingon makeup design only covered those parts which would be visible underneath the helmet, so mostly the bits around the eyes.

One of the alien races that didn’t make the film’s final cut was make-up effects artist Joel Harlow’s briefly-seen Klingons who ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor. “It’s actually a tease,” he points out, “because they’re wearing helmets throughout the entire prison planet scene, so you don’t really see their full faces. All you really see are the areas around their eyes and mouths, so I sculpted and cast a piece that was basically like a Lone Ranger piece that fit around their eyes. We punched hair into that, which gave the effect of being a Klingon without having to design the whole thing.

“What was neat was the helmets were designed with that very familiar Klingon forehead ingrained in them, and then you would see the skin area around the eyes, which would sell the fact that they were Klingons.”

There's one photo at the link. I believe more appeared in the print edition of that piece, but I wasn't able to locate them quickly anywhere online.

Edit again - Klingon makeup with helmet on:
