Some potential decent Fringe news came out the other day from John Noble aka Walter Bishop and the producers...

The producers of Frigne have said they have begun cast searching for SEASON 4 of Fringe and in particular a new character set to appear in the season finale, who will play a major role in season 4...They also seem to indicate they spoke to FOX before this.

John Bishop who plays Walter Bishop also said he's been told by FOX exec Kevin Reilly that Fringe at the moment is likely to be renewed for a 4th season. Now I take this with a giant spoon of salt but this is more positive than no news and no counter source of information has come out yet to say John is wrong.

I was quite worried when last week FOX said over the summer "The Chicago Code" and "Lie To me" will run encore episodes over the summer making many believe FOX was getting ready to keep both shows around and cancel Fringe...Well actually FOX could turn Lie To Me into a summer show for May-September 2012 and any Fringe pickup would probably be a shorten season so Chicago Code could always come to fridays in midseason ;).

FOX must have alot of faith in FRINGE...it is a good thing for fans. :)

All the good news has just been SMASHED...

Fringe drops to a 1.3 rating - NCAA Basketball and Spring just spanked us HOWEVER everything was down. Fringe is dead now unless it can bounce back big time.

Fringe's ratings would go up in the 8pm slot but thats not going to happen.

Actually not everything was down. I don't know why you are surprised by the drop, it should get worse. Now the one thing I wasn't aware of is that basically Fringe is being run straight through with minimal interruptions from its January Winter start. That should help minimize the typical drop that also follows having a month of reruns, but even taking that into account Fringe should still perform worse before the season ends.

Nor is there any evidence that Fringe would perform better in the 8pm hour. During the rest of the year 8pm has lower HUT levels (meaning fewer people on average watch tv at this time (well 7pm on Central time), After the spring daylights savings time, the 8pm hour is hit even harder with larger percentage drops then the other hours of the day. Just because Kitchen Nightmares does better then Fringe at 8pm doesn't mean that Fringe would also do better at 8pm. Its just as possible (actually odds are actually better) that Kitchen Nightmares should do better then Fringe at 9pm That it just naturally has a larger live same day audience.

Oh and while Fox might renew Fringe (I am not Fox so I can't say what will or wont happen with), actors are often the most deluded of indicators on a shows renewal chances. THere are many, many examples of actors on shows that are absolutely getting canned who still say they have heard that chances are good.

As for Fox, FOX has no say on whether Fringe looks for actors for a 4th season, thats a Warner Brothers issue. Fox pays a license fee and gets a set number of episodes. It's Warners that produces, sets price and expenses, and choses how to make and cast their programs (Fox can give notes and can refuse to air an episode), but the day to day and year to year management is still Warners.

At best, at least to me, it shows perhaps that Warners is going to be serious about trying to keep Fox as a customer (ie lowering the license fee), but even if they drop that fee considerably, it still doesn't mean Fox will pick it up, as they have to consider a host of things, largest of which is how their new pilots tests (and we haven't gotten that far yet).

Because Fringe is like that...A Fucking YO/YO for every 2 pieces of good news, we get a large hammer smashing it over the head and the more blows the harder it will to get up.

But "just for you" with the rating down to 1.3 its now most likely dead no matter how many $$$ WB are willing to give FOX to air it for them.

But next week (or whenever basketball isn't on) it will probably go back up to a 1.5 and then you go "There is some life".

Well thats how it works...

1.5 next week wouldn't throw the door open but maybe creek it open BUT with Basketball on again next week I expect another 1.3 rating or maybe a 1.4 rating, neither of which would be good enough. If some report to state Fringe might be safe between now comes out I will post it and my opinion on it. The reports about what the producers claimed and what John Noble said was when the show was steady at 1.5 so this 1.3 changes everything.

This is how I stand on the subject now...

As things stands with a 1.3 rating Fringe will NOT get picked up. I believe next week will get a 1.3 or 1.4 due to basketball so things will still not be safe. Fringe getting a 1.5 the week after that would at least signal it was nothing more of a blip due to Basketball and maybe some good weather.

Fringe has been in my likely to be cancelled section for the past several weeks and when I reported on stuff the producers said I put
Some potential decent Fringe news
I used The word potential not safe or renewed.

and when I reported on John Noble
Now I take this with a giant spoon of salt
and then underneath I put how FOX could do things if it was true.

Well actually FOX could turn Lie To Me into a summer show for May-September 2012 and any Fringe pickup would probably be a shorten season so Chicago Code could always come to fridays in midseason

The question is does FOX believe that Fringe is down only because of the basketball and spring issue. Does FOX believe there is an audience willing to come back in the more watched Fall era in the September/October and November months and is it worth a risk picking it back up over producing a new show in that slot. The DVR numbers will answer the question has the audience gone all the way and the live numbers in the next few weeks will determine if its a blip or not.

In my mind it was doomed to end without and ending as soon as they didn't move the show at the start of the season when Lone Star failed.

No doubt FOX has wasted the post House slot all season. I expect a Bones/Spinoff monday next season.
