TV Ratings (Monday 6th October)

The fact that Dancing with the Stars is a 500 pound Gorilla in terms of viewership is disturbing to me. Why do so many of the masses have such a low threshold for "entertainment"?

retarded that they put so many good shows against each other, and cancel the ones that "fail", while they leave other nights completely barren. Mondays are loaded with things i want to watch, more than my DVR can even record (I have to stream Chuck later, for example), and then tuesdays, there's not much there. Just placeholder crap for the eventual American Idol crapfest, shit they can either cancel or move with no problems...

That may seem like a big number but it's still just six percent of the US population. I could easily see six percent of any population having an outsized interest in ballroom dancing or any other narrow subject. Heck, I've watched some of the most famous performances (Apolo Anton Ono was fantastic that year he was on) on YouTube. I just can't hack all the blah blah blah in between the actual performances (I have the same problem with American Idol).

TV in general caters to little niche audiences nowadays. That's even getting to be true of "hit" shows. Very weird phenomenon and it means that the slightest change in a show results in people dropping it. People don't like the different nuance the writers are giving to Sylar in Heroes, so they tune out. Stuff like that is killing the ratings - people are so damn fussy. (Tho I also kind of think it's good that they're fussy.)

^it's not a nuance to Sylar that's getting people to drop out. It's a season and a half of sloppy, directionless writing, with some boring plots. Honestly, I was a Heroes fan when it started, but i've been rapidly losing interest. Debating whether to drop it from the DVR at this point. I have a hard time 'quitting' on a show after I watch a while, that's the only thing keeping me with it so far. I haven't even watched this week's episode yet...

The sloppy writing is also turning people off, but based on the Heroes thread here, it's different things that are alienating different people. When the DVR figures come out next week for the first week of Heroes (and Chuck) we'll get a better sense of just how many drop-outs are actually time-shifters.

Are you going to start a topic about Wednesday's ratings?

Was away from my PC when ratings came out and only been back a short while from 5 a side footy, so will get them up within next hour.
