Round-Up...

Lets start with Heroes and its in total free fall now leaving the former smash hit fighting for its life only 4 episodes into its 3rd season. It may have a lousy lead in, the strike hurt it and also people didn't like season 2 but the real reason behind this and the entire TV drop in viewers is...TIVO.

TIVO is one of the greatest inventions for customers but its killing Live TV and quick. The problem is we all know that no one watches Adverts so the solution would be to make TIVO's that don't allow you to skip during ad breaks to make it just like you are watching Live TV but am sure people would complain so my answer would be to those wind bags, DON'T FUCKING complain when your shows get canned.

Heroes is not in the Canned zone yet due to the demo but that is beginning to drop becayse one year ago HEROES got...
10.91 million & 5.1/12
NBC also need to stop online viewing from its own network unless they are going to really consider those numbers properly. Any money when TIVO/I Tunes & Website viewers are gathered HEROES gains back the 12-13 million viewers it once had...People aren't leaving TV they just are changing how they watch it, which = CANNED SHOWS.

One of the few shows this year to actually gaining viewers from one year ago is the soon to be ending BOSTON LEGAL, which makes ABC total idiots for canning a show, which is around 1 million in viewers behind there top rated 10pm show B&S, plus its beating the majorty of other ABC shows of any timeslot.

TBBT is also up for this week though not the season average of one year ago, though its in do danger of going anywhere but I think Dollhouse will find it tough going come midseason :(, please FOX put Dollhouse after Idol. The Worst Week is doomed with that poor lead out from Two & Half Men not too mention worst demo of the night, so CBS return Old Christine to the 9:30 slot and save one shows instead of losing two.

Chuck and Life are also doomed but they are far from alone, since there is no hope whatsoever for SCC & PB, expect to hear the bad news very soon that both shows will end after the current 9 though PB might make it to 13 to end the storyline.

Once LOST, HEROES & 24 end for good, I doubt we will see Arc based TV shows on major networks for a long while, they just struggle way too much.

TV by the Numbers declares Heroes a "winner."

Heroes, well back in viewership, and down about 10% from last week, was still the 18-34 winner for the hour and the night.
18-34 is considered the hardest segment to reach; that combined with the fact that NBC doesn't have anything to replace it with should help keep Heroes safe. No more audience erosion, tho!!!

(What do people want, coherent writing and consistent characterization? Fussy fussy! :rommie: Looks like the show is losing older viewers with good taste and keeping the kids who love the crazy audience-pleasing plot twists they're throwing at us. I'm with the kids on this one. This season is a hoot!)

Time-shifting data.

Chuck and Heroes aren't yet on the list since it's for September 15-21, but it shows the big time-shifting numbers for T:SCC and Prison Break. Remember, time-shifting does count (some) in these calculations. Some DVR users watch ads.

And speaking of NBC's desperation, I find TV by the Numbers' Review/Cancel Index very enlightening because it compares each show to the average demo within that network - that's what networks are going to use in deciding where the axe falls. NBC can't swipe something better from ABC or CBS to replace Heroes, and even as Heroes' ratings drop, so do NBC's other programs, keeping Heroes in the same relative place as the Titanic sinks.

Life, Terminator and Pushing Dasies are all on the danger list (and provide some obvious puns in writing headlines when they get cancelled). Chuck and Prison Break are close to the danger zone but so far, Heroes is well clear of it, with only six shows in more stable position. As of 10/5/08, that is...

I know it doesn't go with the ratings but Fox reported earlier tonight that so many people were using their Video on Demand service that it overloaded their server temporarily.

^^ Heroes can get off the losers list but it cannot be put in any such winners list but NBC have nothing to replace it yet though if am NBC I would look for a show to replace after a 4th season if the drop continues.

Some DVR users watch ads.

Some but not enough and the only way networks will truly take note of DVR viewings if the new techs like TIVO are made so they make it just like watching LIVE TV so you have to play the ad's or at least some ad's so networks can make money still of this style of watching or in the end the networks will simply not care at the numbers and will cancel shows, which otherwise would be saved by DVR numbers.

Can the tech be done like that I don't know and will TV fans take that kind of bullet to save there shows ? probably not.

though if am NBC I would look for a show to replace after a 4th season if the drop continues.

They need to be looking for any show that can start out as strongly as Heroes, regardless. They need three or four Heroes, really. I just don't see even one emerging from the lineup they're presenting this fall.

Why isn't there any word on PB being canceled? It has worse ratings than T:SCC.

PB was hinted would end by the writers hand this season no matter what so FOX have no problem with the show wrapping up there storyline so don't expect a 22 episode season. T:SCC will end after the 9 most likely but PB may well get up to 13.

^^^
Not that I watch it but Stephen King really likes PB for the guilty pleasure it is. He had a write up in Entertainment Weekly a couple weeks ago on it. Be curious to see if the does a follow-up should cancellation come to PB.

Mr King also likes the Red Sox, that didnt stop them from loosing to the Yankees 80+ years, my point is they arnt going to keep it on air just becasue he likes it.

That said he might come up with a interesting ending to the whole thing.

On the PBK wiki page, they have titles for 14 episodes listed.

My guess is PB will be given to them whatever has been promised but T:SCC will not see a full season, maybe they could try 2 or 3 episodes once 24 is back or Idol for a partner but silm chances it would work.

Matt Roush weighs in on the Monday Mess (I'm quoting it because it's a rare instance of confirmation that, yes, DVR and online viewing do count to some extent):

Question: A lot has been mentioned by you and others about the overcrowding on Monday nights, especially in the 8 o'clock hour. Chuck and the CBS comedies are must-DVR's for me, but I also love Sarah Connor. My situation is further complicated by the fact that I work nights and thus don't have the option to watch one and record two. I would hate to see any of these shows canceled (either mid-season or before next year) because they were simply in the wrong time slot. With that foundation, I have a couple of related questions. First off, do networks take the level of competition into account when looking at a show's ratings and deciding whether to keep it or axe it? Also, how are the number of people who DVR a show counted? How about those who stream them online? Is there enough evidence out there to support streaming a show online later versus DVR-ing it when it comes to the effect on how a network views its survival chances? — Davey Y.

Matt Roush:
It's all very complicated and still a work in progress in terms of how all of this data is analyzed, but it's fair to say that all of these factors are taken into account, and no one in the business is blind to the challenges of any show breaking out in this time period — especially when a 500-pound gorilla named Dancing with the Stars is dominating the competition. DVR viewership within a week of the airdate is counted, though it takes more time to measure than the standard overnight Nielsens, and online streaming is also becoming more of a factor in terms of gauging a show's following. But even so, if a show isn't pulling its weight where it most matters, in prime time with live viewership, it's fair to assume its commercial viability (including where ad dollars are concerned) will be called into question. I can't imagine this Monday mess won't claim at least a few casualties.
