Daniel Craig never "detested" playing Bond, did he? I always thought he genuinely enjoyed the part.

Yeah he loved it. He loved it so much that before the last movie came out he said he rather slit his wrists before playing the part again. He was offered 68 million pounds (100 million USD) and said no.

He's never denied enjoying playing the part, but he has been fairly vocal about being unhappy with the troubled productions of his movies. He and Forster were rewriting Quantum of Solace on the set because they started shooting with a first draft and Forster was completely in over his head, and it seemed like absolutely nobody was happy with Spectre, according to the Sony leak, considering they wrote the third act on the fly and pretty much everyone from the studio heads on down disliked the script.

Quantum of Solace kinda got screwed by the writer's strike didn't it? It seems like the third act of Spectre went through a whole heap of rewrites. The awful thing is I suspect what we got may actually be the best of the bunch! It's telling that they got Logan to write the script, then got Purvis and Wade back to do more work on it, then got Jez Butterworth in to do yet more work on it and it was still rubbish! It's sad really, up until Bond and Madeline left Austria I was sitting there thinking it was the best Bond film I'd ever seen but then they just didn't seem to know quite what to do. Telling as well that Mendes was still editing just days before the premiere.

I see Mendes has come out and said he won't be back, which is odd because I thought he'd already made that clear months ago? He's also said the next Bond would surprise people. Whether he's actually in the know or just working on past history of them mostly casting relative unknowns, is anyone's guess.
