"You can’t be accepting and tolerant without working for it. The show is about that struggle." - EP @AkivaGoldsman #StarTrekDiscovery #TCA17

Theme Music previewed – picks up on original Courage score
CBS chose to preview the Star Trek: Discovery theme music scored by Jeff Russo, which apparnetly picks up on themes from the original Star Trektheme.

Theme to #StarTrekDiscovery was performed by 60-piece orchestra, pays homage to original. @scj #TCA17 @StarTrek

Talking Dead production company to make after show
CBS also announced they have picked Embassy Row to produce the Star Trek: Discovery after show. This is the same company that produces the Talking Dead and Taking Saul after shows for AMC. The after show will run approximately 30-40 minutes and have have social elements built in. There will be a new episode of the after show each night that CBS All Access has a new Star Trek: Discovery episode. No word yet on who will be the host.

For those unconvinced, it has been said before but re-iterated that the series takes place in the Prime timeline.

"The theme song runs a full minute and a half, and they intend it to play on every episode of the CBS All Access streaming service. The opening notes are familiar to the original series before it goes off in a new direction. It then ends with the traditional original series melody again. The clip showed Russo conducting the 60 piece orchestra, and we think you can hear all 60 instruments in it."

That part got me excited. I love the Courage fanfare and like the idea of opening with familiar notes and then running in a new direction. Whether I like the show or not, I can't wait to hear the theme!

I agree. Using that fanfare (which I think Courage called "Where No Man Has Gone Before", then coupled it with the TOS Theme) puts you in the universe. It tells you that this is Star Trek. I know that DS9, VOY and ENT did not use it for their themes and I love DS9 and VOY themes, but I always preferred the fanfare to start off a Trek theme.

Agreed. Especially the part I put in bold. The animated series had a peculiar variation of the original theme that I also like. And I have to admit that I was excited when I learned Goldsmith's music from Star Trek:The Motion Picture was going to be used for TNG. But I dearly wish at least they all had a call-back to the original opening.

You mentioned TMP. I suddenly remembered when we saw TMP in the theatre in 1979, the audience clapped when the TOS theme music played when Kirk was narrating the log entries, more when it played louder after Spock came aboard.

In TNG, if you've heard the original GNP Crescendo Records TNG soundtrack album, it had the alternate opening theme (which was an original piece). That, too, had the fanfare starting it off.

Oh wow! I never even knew about an alternate TNG soundtrack. Now I have to track that down. One of the anniversary releases for TMP includes the Courage melody that was used for the scenes you mentioned, and I use that as a boot sound for my desktop at home (named 'Starship').

That sounds like it would be an amazing boot sound! I like it!

Look for this soundtrack: https://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Ge...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=CXM9XX6K2G18AXJG7Q03

I remember getting this on cassette tape when it was released originally. It was composed and recorded, but never used. It's the last track on the album. I believe Dennis McCarthy composed it. It's interesting in that you're expecting the TMP music, but then there's an original piece of music there.

OH!

I *have* heard that one before ... it was a bit too bombastic and '80s for my taste. I'm glad they went with Goldsmith.

Well remember - GR hasd sold the rights to TOS lock stock and Barrel to Paramount after the network run concluded. TNG was something new that GR had a new rights deal for (read he was in for profit sharing from the marketing) so that's one reason he retooled and retconed a lot of what was in TNG from TOS. GR hoped TNG would be the penultimate version of 'Star Trek' and would supplant and begin to replace and outsell TOS themed merchandise (which he got no money from).

That sounds way too much like a John Williams-y Superman score. So weird to hear it and imagine it being a part of Star Trek history! Thanks for posting.
