Turning Vegetarian

I find this trend in 'veggie' products very perplexing. There are veggie burgers, tofu turkeys and apparently look-alike corn dogs. To people supposedly averse to eating meat... one wonders.

Because some people, like myself, like what are considered Americana foods. Hot dogs, hamburgers, corn dogs, things like that are good, they're a part of so many social situations (barbecues, tailgate parties, etc.).

They just don't want to taste the fear.

Hey, try this one: "I don't want to have a heart attack by the time I turn 40." Novel, eh?

Eating meat is a billion dollar industry. From farming to transporting to distribution, culinary schools, restaurants, etc. That supports a lot of families. If everyone quit eating meat, would we have great athletes? How exciting would football, baseball, basketball, and the Olympics be (especially football with scrawny vegetarians) ???

Also, animals would no longer be raised for slaughter. So if there are no more ranches, then there are no more cows, etc., except for milk. Who here wants to contribute to the extinction of animals that we eat (pigs, for example) ???
If the humans are drinking all the milk from the dairy cows (or eating dairy products like cheese) just what are all those calves going to be living off of? Those cows don't start producing milk just because the farmers ask nicely. The cows won't produce milk unless they periodically give birth to a calf. The calves aren't going to be ready to eat grain for a while, so you can't have them hanging around drinking all that milk you're depending on to make a living. So if you're going to have a dairy industry you will need to be selling some veal.

Except you look like a tool when you do that with fake meat.

Or try this one: add more veggies, and moderate meat, but don't eliminate it entirely. Maybe even work out a bit. Novel, eh?

I don't care. If I enjoy it and I'm not bothering you or making you eat it, why is it a problem with you?

Sure, but your reason was that vegetarians don't want to taste the fear, a rather silly comment. You didn't even think that there might be other reasons, you just decided to lay down a whole bunch of stereotypes on people doing something you don't understand.

I'm not a complete vegetarian yet, I am slowly working into it over several months. What business is it of yours whether I eat only vegetables and grains? Why do you have such a problem with that?

It's not, but I still like to poke fun at someone who just has to have some special knockoff of real food, because I think it's funny.

I've actually heard that come out of some self-important vegetarian's mouth, so it is indeed based on reality, even if I was making fun of it.

Anyone who says they are vegetarian for moral reasons makes me think of the example I cited, Someone who says they're doing it for health reasons makes me think of those scrawny waifs I see getting the vegi-burger in the lunch line, and even one of my friends who eats with us at lunch. It also makes me remember all those conversations I had in health class about how a vegetarian diet has more disadvantages than advantages. I also know someone who just got grossed out working with meat, so I don't tease her as much.

I don't have a problem with it, I just think it's silly, but I really wish you the best of health since that's the reason you think it will help you.

This is just a case of ignorance leading to "lulz."

I'm glad you enjoy it.

Tachyon, if you're serious about it, just be aware that you'll be facing this kind of stupid shit on a fairly regular basis, regardless of whether you try to push it onto other people.

Have you seen my pictures in the picture thread?
I don't ever see me getting waif like.

As for moral reasons, meh. If someone has them, all the more power to them. I was a meat cutter when I was vegetarian (a couple of years ago I was full on veggie). I ripped guts out of all kinds of once moving creatures (and got paid next to nothing for it). I do it for my health, although I completely understand why people don't eat meat for moral reasons. There are people in other countries who eat dogs and cats, something many here would be enraged about, but to them, they're just two more animals in the mix.

Stereotypes do not serve anyone well, and to laugh at people for wanting to improve their lives, improve their health, well that's just not right. You're free to eat whatever you please, why knock someone else for doing the same? You cite a "self important vegetarian" but you do the same by mocking people who aren't even bothering you. As for vegetarianism and health, studies show the average vegetarian adds 4-7 years more to their lifespan than someone with the standard diet, and longer if they don't smoke.

I just don't like the texture of meat. however, I've been sick with a bad cold and the ONLY thing that really helped (with the tummy ache and semi-nausea I got from the antibiotics) was chicken stew and broth. while I'll never be a strict vegetarian (I do love certain kinds of fish and of course chicken, oh and will probably never turn down my mom's goat curry!), I like eating vegetarian food on a regular basis. it makes me feel lighter, makes me feel good, and sits right with my system. plus, I'm Indian so I don't have to make the veggie stuff look like fake meat :p

once in a while though... I do go to Five Guys for a gobble session ;)

And nature still won't treat you any differently from anyone else, whether you refuse to eat meat or not. Isn't that comforting? ;)

Is not a corn dog. At least, not in the traditional sense. It is a veggie corn dog. It's all veggie. It looks like a corn dog, smells like a corn dog, and I swear it tastes like a corn dog, but it has no saturated fat, no cholesterol, is made from all veggie, and tastes very good.

Vegetarian or meat, it doesn't even look like food. :wtf: :p

How could anyone tell the difference from looking at the outside? The meat is normally on the inside, under the batter....

Not everyone can afford to be vegetarians

I'd be interested to know if the people here who claim that it is necessary for a balanced diet to eat meat have any scientific backup or if this more of a guess on their part.

As far as I know it is not important what protein you eat. Your body builds its own proteins and what it needs to do that is certain amino acids - this is what protein is made of. These essential amino acids (those which your body can't build by itself) can be found in all kinds of sources including vegetables, grains, milk and eggs. For a balanced diet it is useful to combine the right kinds of protein sources.

According to what I've read on the topic vegetarians actually tend to be more healthy and have a longer life expectancy than meat eaters, which of course might be due to the fact that many vegetarians are more aware of what they eat and don't smoke.

And why would a vegetarian necessarily need to be scrawny? You can take in enough protein to build up muscle without resorting to meat and you can just as well get fat by eating non-meat foodstuffs.

I don't understand why people seem to get downright offended by others not adhering to the same diet they do.

^^ People get offended when they're told that "being responsible" includes not eating meat, and that you're morally wrong to do otherwise.

But not every vegetarian will attack you for eating meat. I find it unfair to condemn the whole lifestyle just because you are annoyed by some of the people trying to make you feel bad for eating meat.

Which is why I tend to roll my eyes whenever religion is brought up like it actually matters. "God exists!" "No he doesn't!" Who cares?
"I'm a vegetarian!" "I'm a meat eater!" Who cares?
To each their own.

And if you don't care about religion, just leave it alone. That's what I try to do most of the time. (Just most. Nobody's perfect.)
