Turkish Airlines flight crashes near Amsterdam Airport

A passenger jet carrying more than 130 people crashed into a field as it was coming into land in Amsterdam Airport today. The Turkish Airlines Boeing 737-800 broke into three pieces on impact, but fatalities were initially thought to be minimal. Images from the scene of the Amsterdam crash show the plane broken into three pieces.

There were conflicting reports about whether anyone was killed on the plane, which had 135 people onboard.
An airline official told CNN sister station CNN-Turk that at least one person was confirmed dead, but Turkish transportation minister Binali Yildrim said no one had died but that there were injured.
Journalist Ivan Watson in Istanbul said Turkish media quoted one crash survivor saying people were able to walk away from the crash.
"He said the back of the plane hit the ground first. He said it was not an extremely horrible situation, it was like being in turbulence. He said it was more like a sudden impact, then we stopped."
So far Dutch media have reported about 7 dead.
Since the plane was on its approach to land, there was little fuel left on board so I think its why it didnt caught fire.

Fox just reported that all 134 passengers and crew survived. No casualties. Thank God.

:)
Fox should stop listening to Turkish ministers that have little sense of what is happening at the crash site which is over 1500 miles away ;).

;) <--- So you're happy they may be wrong???? :wtf:

They received their info from the airline directly, not from the turkish ministers. New reports on the ground say four are dead.

It's cool that anyone could survive a crash like this, let alone the majority of passengers.

But, it's strange that the crash was so close to the airport - makes me think that human error is the most likely explanation...

9 people dead, the latest reports say.

However have you noticed that the most recent air accidents have had a more positive outcome than normally? The helicopter which ditched in the North Sea last week lost none of the passengers or crew.

I guess it probably releates to the sheer number of them but the number of accidents involving the 737s is quite high.

Depends on whether this was the intended landing site or not. Any in-flight problem could cause the pilot to seek an emergency landing site, and in those conditions it's easy to understand the plane not quite getting there. The description of events makes it sound like the pilot managed a relatively soft landing in that field, which would be my first choice if my engine was out and it looked like I wasn't going to make a runway.

As the picture shows, it was on approach to the fifth runway (the Polderbaan). Eyewitnesses describe the plane flying very slowly when suddenly the tail went down and it crashed into the field.
It also narrowly missed the A9 highway.

I've heard rumours that the plane actually ran out of fuel during the flight. Which explains why it didnt catch fire when it crashed.

The tail went down? That seems odd. Running on fumes I could see the pilot taking a nose-up attitude for the glide, but if he hit a stall then I would have expected the nose to go down abruptly, and if not then I would have expected the plane to sink more or less evenly.

Wow. How terrifying. Although if there were only 9 fatalities, that is not nearly as bad as it could have been.

It's still 9 casualties and that's still terrible. But at least it's not 134 or whatever...

I'm happy emergency services were able to respond in such a timely manner ... there have been significant worries in the last few years. And luckily it didn't go down in a more crowded area ....

9 people would disagree...if they were still around.

Also, the New York commuter flight crash didn't have a good outcome.

Latest information that I see says nine people were killed and 55 injured, 24 lightly, 25 seriously and 6 critically. :(

But that means more than half the people survived uninjured. Hopefully, all of the injured will recover.

As one who works in the aviation industry, it actually looks as if the tail impacted first..if he was in a normal nose up approach, that would make sense..But the lack of fire couldn't be caused by just empty tanks..aircraft NEVER run completely out of fuel in the tanks, one can spend HOURS draining the tanks after thay have been pumped empty..and nothing explodes better than an "empty" gas can..as they are full of fumes..and the fumes are what ignites...

More likely the impact speed and altitude weren't enough to cause any sparks in the tanks..along with what looks to be wet conditions in the air and the ground...
