True Blood 3x09 - Everything is Broken

That was a great line.

Russell's appearence was so unexpected (I knew he would show up on the news but not like that) I had to rewatch it twice to make sure I actually saw what I thought I saw.

I'm interested in knowing how and why the Great Revelation occurred in the first place. I find it hard to believe there isn't an ulterior motive. Vampires are either in a weaker position than we give them credit for or a much greater position of power than we know. But after thousands of years why make themselves known? Are they simply a low population species surrounded by more and more humans and technology, scared that being found out instead of unveiling themselves would do them more harm? Is the "True Blood" drink all it's cracked up to be or is humanity still on the table on a larger scale than some strippers with boob jobs in the back of Nan's limo?

Which was awesome BTW.

I think the authority and American vampire league are probably relatively young vampires and it was there idea to get together and have the revelation as a way to control the older vampires. I get the feeling that most of the 'old' vampires are probably still in the old world.

I mean, how the hell can 20% of the public not have an opinion about whether or not vampires should have equal rights?

In political polls, "undecided" is where they lump people sane enough to know that the binary choice is a lie, a false dilemma.

Vampires already have equal rights. The government does not and cannot grant rights. Rights are innate to every sapient being. Government merely recognizes those rights, or violates them.

The distinction is important. If those rights did not exist independently from the state, then there would be no moral obligation for the state to give them to anyone. People would have rights only because of the state's good will and generosity. Because we recognize that rights are fundamental and innate, that they cannot be stripped and they cannot be granted, the state has a moral obligation to recognize and protect the rights of all people.

The fact that vampires are immortal predators is immaterial to the issue, just as accusations homosexuals are more likely to molest children (as absurd as such accusations are) are immaterial to the issue of their rights. You cannot deny people their rights just because they might do something in the future. Everyone has the potential to commit horrible crimes. Such danger does not in an off itself give anyone a legitimate reason to ignore fundamental rights. If it did then no one would have any rights.

However, the fact that vampires can be dangerous can be factored in in other ways, such as changes to police and trial procedure to compensate for this fact while still respecting the vampire's rights and providing due process.

To put it another way, respect vampire's rights, but remove restrictions on ownership of short-barreled shotguns and issue wooden-tipped silver ammunition to police as a matter of course.

The funny thing is that early in this season I thought the show had lost its appeal and was in danger of becoming weighed down by the melodrama and the soap opera elements. I even contemplated bailing on it for a few moments but then the plot started to come together and everything turned into the craziest, wildest rollercoaster ride ever. :)

I feel almost exactly the same.

I also want to just add that I found the Russell ending of this episode the best 5 (or whatever) minutes of TV I have seen in 2010.

There is blood in their hair, just very little in Alexander Skarsgard's. There is a dab on (his) left side burn extending from where it splattered up his cheek. There is lots in Paquin's hair, and Moyer's hair is so dark it's hard to tell.

Yeah that was probably necessary to point out, but I just had to. :)
