Tron Legacy trailers

It's unfortunate when effects that are old and outdated are enough to turn people off from movies. :(

Ain't that the truth. Great sadness.....

As outdated a some of the FX are, they DESIGN of the film is still awesome, being created by the likes of Moebius and Syd Mead, et al., and should be appreciated by everyone.

Funny thing is...in 1982, even people who watched it didn't really "get" a lot of it...now that we use sophisticated computers in our palms every day I think there might be more appreciation for the concepts.

I don't know why, but I just cannot bring myself to care about this movie. I want to want to see it, but I don't.

There were 2 movies that changed what I thought was possible visually when I was a teenager...that actually took me literally into another world and immersed me in it and inspired me...one was Blade Runner, the other...Tron. If you didn't see it as a kid, you may not appreciate it as much. Tron's strength isn't characters..it doesn't have to be, its all about concept and execution.

This might help you appreciate it better...Steven Lisberger is an under-appreciated visionary.

I have to admit, "Derezzed" is a neat track but doesn't really psyche me by itself. I'll have to see it in context. ;) But it is nice to hear some of the great trailer music in there, and the soundtrack sounds good.

I was finally able to rent a copy of Tron on DVD yesterday from a local video rental store.

I had not seen the whole film is YEARS... probably 15-20 years ago. But I have to say that the effects hold up pretty darn well! While the effects are clearly dated, the overall style aesthetic is fairly consistent and works pretty well. Upconverted to 1080i it looked quite good.

And the movie was not as 'bad'/'cheesy' as I feared. It is a bit slow in the beginning, but once it gets going it holds your attention. My kids (7 and 10) enjoyed it as well, although it clearly was boring them in the slower spots. They both really want to see Tron Legacy ;), but I need to see it first to determine if I want them to see it at their current age.

I also picked up on a lot more of the allegory than I did as a kid, which was interesting to observe. I hope these user/religion themes are continued in Tron Legacy.

I am now even more excited to see the new film. :)

It looks great... but I am slightly worried.

Is anyone else thinking that this could become a huge BO bomb? Is there a market for such a film today?

Define BO bomb? Clash of the Titans pulled in $163M and it featured what was, by all accounts, a horrible example of 3D cinema. The story and acting were flimsy at best. It was rated PG-13.

Tron: Legacy, which is rated PG (making it more appealing to the kiddie masses), ought to do at least as much business as Clash. Which would mean that it'd recoup its rumored $170M production budget (not counting the worldwide markets). Beyond that? Who knows. But Disney's been promoting this film everywhere. It has the potential to be a true "event" film if its 3D visuals are as stunning as they seem in trailers and the story is anything close to engaging. Plus, it doesn't have a whole lot of competition to face. North of $200M seems quite attainable.

If it lands somewhere in the How To Train Your Dragon - Shrek 4 - Despicable Me range ($220M - $250M) the studio will probably be quite pleased.
