I swear Flynn said that he recruited Tron who was at the time of Flynn's return busy off protecting the old sector of the Grid when he arrived.

During his exposition about the creation of the Grid, Flynn tells Sam that Tron, who protected the Old System, was brought over to the New System to do the same. I immediately assumed Flynn obtained a copy of Tron to use in his new program.

I interpreted it as Tron was moved from the old Grid to the new one (so more of a Cut and Paste, not so much a Copy). Either theory works to explain Tron's presence however.

I just saw this again last night and absolutely just love the film. I dunno if the nostalgic part of me is being easily influenced or if it is the overwhelming visual smorgasbord that is presented with the film once Sam enters the Grid but this is easily my third favorite film of this year. I paid attention to that scene and Flynn specifically states that he "brings" Tron from the Old System to help him and Clu build the new system. So it would appear that it was the original Tron not a copy. I wonder what happened to Yori? There's lots of questions that raise from this movie that maybe will be revealed in a sequel, or maybe the prequel "Tron:Uprising" series. I also haven't read the comic either. I really marked out for this film (using a pro wrestling term).

I also saw this movie again, it's getting strong word of mouth and the theater was packed. Tried to find the CD but everybody was sold out. Finally I found one, and they only had one left, which I promptly bought. Again I highly recommend this movie for the movie going experience only big cinema can give you. I may see it again yet. It's that good.
I know it ripped off some scenes from other movies, but you know the best movies usually do a little of that. Didn't bother me at all, as a Star Wars fan I like the knock off of the lightsabre battle at the "End of the Line" club. And as I am type this I am listening to the Daft Punk score, which my car stereo makes good use of when I am on the Highway.

I am such geek I just ordered a new Tron mouse from Razor, my old one died anyways.

If Clu's army was going to enter the real world using Flynn's mass, then maybe they would have come out as little men afterall. :rommie:
Ha! Like the G'Gugvuntts and Vl'hurgs from Hitchiker's. :)

My take on this was that Flynn's disc had a way to take their "mass" from within the Grid and convert it into the parameters of what one would consider proportional in the human world, so Clu himself would have been the same size as Flynn himself, and if you use that as the template, the warship would have been ginormous.

I still love the way Flynn's Grid "apartment" was laid out. The whole 2001-vibe was really there. Especially the floor panels that light up...

...actually Flynn should have said "That glowing floor really tied the room together". ;)

I saw the film, really liked it, but can't really be bothered to write a review or anything. But there is one thing that keeps bugging me.

All these comparisons of Jeff Bridges performance to that of The Dude. Has anyone actually seen the original Tron? Does anyone actually remember what the character of Flynn was like? Because Flynn in Tron: Legacy, given his circumstances, the character is portrayed as a very logical progression from who he was in the first film. Calling Jeff Bridges performance one like that of The Dude is an insult to the performance, in my opinion.

I agree. I chalked up to Flynn being an 80's character stuck and without reference to current slang and language rather than him channeling the Dude.

TRON: Legacy -- good, but a bit disappointing

I just saw Tron: Legacy myself today.

It is good, but it is disappointing.

My disappointments fall into three categories:

First, the music. To be fair, the score by Daft Punk was far better than I'd expected, but then again, given what Wendy Carlos did with the original, I was expecting something akin to Salieri pinch-hitting for Mozart. To say that Daft Punk are not in the same league as Wendy Carlos would be putting it very mildly. Then again, the producers of the original made a similar, if not so blatant error: they cut Wendy's entire cue for the Light Cycles sequence (it ended up as the basis for a movement in her "Moonscapes" suite), as well as about the last half of her close music (for the sake of some wretched song by Journey!).

Second was the absence of Dr. Lora Baines, and her software alter-ego, Yori. I would say that Cindy Morgan's absence from Tron: Legacy was as senseless and inexcusable as that of Barbara ("Agent 99") Feldon from "The Nude Bomb." It's understandable that Gibbs/Dumont was absent from T:L, for the same reason it's understandable that the Chief of Control was absent from Nude Bomb: Barnard Hughes died in 2006, and Ed Platt died in 1974. But the absence of Feldon and the Max/99 chemistry was the biggest nail in Nude Bomb's coffin, and Cindy Morgan's absence didn't exactly help T:L.

Finally, the distinctive surreal visual texture of the "Electronic World" scenes in the original -- necessitated as it was by the limits of CGI at the time, and the use of backlit animation, and of sets so dark that depth-of-field was measured in fractions of an inch -- was sorely missing. Everything in this film's "Electronic World" scenes just looked too much like ordinary actors, sets, and props, with a bit of neon clothing. Simply put, the Electronic World NEEDS to look different from the world we live in.

There's a review thread over in Sci-fi and Fantasy where you can review the movie and take part in a fun poll.

Re: TRON: Legacy -- good, but a bit disappointing

Re: Referencing "The Nude Bomb" in a modern movie critique...Man, I'm with you!! (The Nude Bomb...I thought I was the only person who'd seen that!)

As far as Tron:Legacy goes, the problem was that it looked pretty but was predictable as all get out and it moved waaaaaaaaaaaay toooooooooooo ssssllloooowwwwwww!!

Jus' Sayin'

(heh...The Nude Bomb!! Ha...at least Larmine was in that!)

I also watched the film again and loved it even more the second time around. Having listened to the score dozens of times, it was great to see it visually applied again and made me love it all the more. The only thing I'm only slightly disappointed is that we don't get to see Tron's face after he returns to good again.

Re: TRON: Legacy -- good, but a bit disappointing

My gosh! One of the biggest geek movies of the past year, that's been out for weeks, and here and all you're the first one to share any thoughts on it! The mind boggles!

Seriously, dude, run a search. Or, hell, just look at the first page of SF/F. Your brief insight isn't so precious and earth-shattering that it can't play along with those of the other children.

Very much agreed. Flynn was a free spirit.

I took my 10 yr old to see it the other day (We watched the original on DVD a while back) and we both LOVED it.

Completely unnecessary.
