Tron 3 is coming (and Garrett Hedlund is confirmed to come back)

Finally!! Someone else gets it!! All of those subtleties were lost on the mainstream audience, I think...

They were certainly lost on me. I had no experience with the original franchise other than knowing Captain Sheridan was in it.

I don't think the first movie really had a lot of subtext. In plot/narrative terms it was more of a fantasy adventure film. Indeed just the surface text of the film was often pretty obscure, so you'd need a JCB to uncover and real subtext. It had a lot of interesting ideas mixed with a lot of the old tried and true tropes, but IMO it never fully came together.

Not that I have a problem with the original film you understand. It was a ground breaking and often tragically overlooked piece of art. However, as a film it fails to gave any of it's characters any real depth. Even Flynn is essentially two dimension and practically (and sometimes literally) stumbles through the events that unfold around him. Tron is the only one with any drive but his motivations are essentially just blind faith in his User.

One of the oddest things for me is how awkward and half hearted the quasi-romance jealously triangle (pentagon?) was between Flynn, Baines & Alan/Flynn, Yori & Tron. It felt like it was just there because they had to tick that box, but had no clue what to do with it. As a result Baines is little more than a plot device and Yori is barely more than set decoration.

Something I really appreciated about Legacy is how they addressed this in their handling of Quorra. On the surface she may seem like a typical action-girl/love interest for the male protagonist, but if you actually pay attention you'll note that there is no romance between Sam & Quorra.

There's certainly a connection and a fast friendship but they never reduced her to a damsel in distress or prize to be won. Indeed, she saves or moves to Sam's defence on no less than four occasions, even willingly sacrificing herself at one point so the Flynns can escape. By contrast, Sam comes to her rescue *once*. From a a character arc perspective, this is as much her movie as it is his.

What a lot of people missed is that thematically, they're not a romantic couple but siblings.

This all pretty well illustrates how the whole film was constructed to function on the surface as an action heavy popcorn movie for the masses, while still having a surprising amount of depth for those willing to go looking for it.

I think Disney may be waiting till Comic Con or D23 to officially announce it. Maybe have a trailer like they did for Legacy.

I am happy but not surprised either. If she had not come back the ending of Legacy would have made an actual direct sequel impossible. Nice to have confirmation though.

Baring any contractual conflicts, I was never in any doubt that she'd be willing to come back. My impression was that she genuinely enjoyed the role and even reprised it a few years back for the sadly short lived animated series.

I will be very thrilled to see Olivia Wilde return. And I thought they did a terrific job making the animated Quorra in Tron Uprising. I mean you could tell that that was indeed, visually, Olivia Wilde. And that she reprised her role in voice was just fantastic.

Olivia Wilde seems to be a much bigger name than Garett Hedlund. So, if they're formally announcing her involvement, I'm believing this is going to happen. Good. It would have been a real pain to wait another 28 years for a sequel. I would have been 70.

No no no no....!!!! I've been waiting for five years for a sequel to Tron Legacy!!!

From the article it sounds like the failure of Tomorrowland led to them shit-canning Tron 3. Grr....

I don't see any mention of causation there. The paragraph actually says that Disney's live-action films have been quite successful lately, with Tomorrowland being the one exception, and that their live-action slate is still quite full. So it isn't saying that specific film has anything to do with this decision; it's just one item in a larger discussion.

Unrelated, but man, I'm getting tired of seeing that online font that cuts the right side off of the italic g. It makes it look kinda like a c with a cedilla.

"I'm not saying it was Tomorrowland..."

But come on, the project was coming together, the timing's too much of a coincidence, it's Tomorrowland.

I had a feeling this would happen, Disney was dragging their feet way too much with getting started on the sequel.

I guess this topic's title is now completely wrong and needs to be changed? :o

Was it coming together? As the article says, it was never officially greenlit. There was some forward movement in the development process, but it's not a remotely rare or unique event for a non-greenlit film to stall in development or be backburnered. It happens all the time, for any number of reasons. So no, it's not too much of a coincidence.
