sci-fi veteran Bruce Boxleitner (aka Alan Bradley, Tron) reports that another TRON movie is on the way. And yes, says Boxleitner, this time around, fans of the original 1982 film will get to see more of Tron himself.

Although Disney has yet to confirm a third TRON, the studio hired screenwriter David DiGilio last June to pen a script for the hypothetical sequel
"The last movie didn't [really] end," Boxleitner told IAmRogue. "It actually started the next movie and then went to black.

Boxleitner said he was enthusiastic about the prospects of a new TRON movie, despite unconfirmed reports of budgetary constraints and other potential difficulties.

"It's [definitely] in the works. Anything could happen, but all I can say is, it's in its formative stages," said Boxleitner.

"[Joseph] Kosinski, who is slated for it, he's shooting another movie now [Oblivion/Horizons], and then they'll get around to doing that. I think somewhere around 2014, maybe. I'm talking way out of school here, but they can't shoot me because I'm Tron."

Disney must have only been able to afford one rubbery-faced version of the original cast at a time (when not in low-rez, fuzzy flashback mode). I'd love to see Tron back in all his glory, and I'd really like to see what a modern version of the computer world would look like - the "new" grid from Legacy was really just one city, created using all the futuristic technology of the late 1980s. I want to see what today's computers look like on the inside, all networked, wified and bluetoothed to hell compared to the mainframe style we had back then.

I thought the last movie was surprisingly cool, but don't really see a need for a third. Most of the fun last time came from simply getting to revisit this world and see it reimagined in a whole new way.

But now that we've SEEN everything, a sequel would just end up feeling like more of the same. Plus, as far as evil plots go, it's hard to top Clu attempting to bring an entire army into the real world.

What about Dillinger Jr recreating the Master Control Program, and now thanks to the Net (which it was pretty much creating in the first movie) it can spread all over the place thanks to all pre-existing ENCOM software being utilized?

As long as they bring back Olivia Wilde, I'm happy. Sad part is, the way current trends are going, Tron Legacy is going to look awfully outdated by 2014 so whether they're going to be able to come up with something filmgoers in 2 years will actually want to see is another question. Sigh, and I suppose it'll be in 3-D as well. :(

Yeah, I loved Legacy, but looking back at it, I guess I kind of wished it had evolved more than it did. I've pictured the world of Tron to be self-aware and ever evolving, keeping the classic Tron look while using new elements to its evolution like wifi and bluetooth. And in a way, the fact that it was a city kind of made it less grand.

i thought Legacy was great so i hope we get a third movie. Disney seems somewhat hesitant though. if nothing else, we have the cartoon series which will begin in a few months.

Nuts, Bruce Boxleitner was at the Toronto Fan Expo last week. Should have asked him about Tron 3...

Nope. All of this has really been known since last year. Disney is still in a waiting period, I don't believe there is even a writer attached to this yet.

And when is the cartoon supposed to start airing? Wasn't it slated for last fall, which then came and went?

I need me some more Tron..

I think the potential is endless for the evolving world beyond Tron:Legacy... Because that's the legacy itself now.. Flynn's world languished as it was because Kevin was trapped inside.. Now that Sam has it, he can continue the development of the Gridworld, and along with Quorra's help, bring the Isos breadth and knowledge into it. The potential is there, to change the world.. Dillenger Jr. will realize this, and try to exploit it, thus making him the new "big-bad"...

The new writer was announced in the OP.

The OP also implied that Disney wants the director of Legacy to handle it, but he's tied up with another project for the next two years. I don't think anything can really happen until the director finally starts pre-production.

I don't believe an airdate was ever officially announced back then. But so far, the series is supposed to start this June, with mini episodes--similar to what Disney XD did Avengers: Earth's Mightest Heroes--supposedly to precede it in April.

@C.E. Evans yeah but the Kosiniski being busy thing has been known for quite some time...and i forgot that a writer was finally chosen. The fact is that aside from Bruce's comments, there really has been no real news on this project. I think the cartoon was supposed to air sometime this summer...but was delayed or something. Haven't heard much about it.

More Tron please, I highly enjoyed Legacy.

Part of me hopes Disney losing $200 million on John Carter won't impact this.

Hey, did anyone ever see this:

I ordered this Tron light cycle flash drive today.

I too worry that after John Carter and yet still agreeing on a $200m Lone Ranger that plans for a Tron 3 could possibly suffer.

Those USB flash drives look pretty groovy. I'm well up for a third one and the seeds are definitely in Legacy for it. I really enjoyed the look and feel of that film and thought the cast did a great job. I was surprised at the "fan" backlash. This wasn't some rushed crapfest trying to cash in on nostalgia - that could have been done years ago.

The only thing i had to criticize were the "youthed" up faces of Bridges and in the few sequences Boxleitner.. they looked fake and were noticeable, however kudos for the effort.

Everything else i loved.. the music by Daft Punk was brilliant, the visual design too and i loved the occasional flashback to the original Tron. The story had some holes in it but then it's never been a contender for the Oscars but i really enjoyed it and am definitely looking forward to a sequel (of sorts).

Agreed. It wasn't that bad, but if you watch Tron and Tron Legacy back-to-back it's pretty clear they didn't take the time/money to make the CG Flynn look more like Jeff Bridges or the technology just isn't there yet (probably the latter).

The opening scene really didn't need to have a face-shot of Flynn, but the CG is pretty good in its own right and clearly we need to see Clu during the film.
