Trick or Treaters

So what type of trick or treaters are you getting at your hosue this year? Last year I had a kid who was so excited he ran right into our door. He fell down but wasn't bothered at all once I gave him some candy.

I also give extra candy to anyone who is in a Batman costume or a Star Wars costume. Especially if they're younger. I had a three year old Batman today and I was extremely pleased that the legacy of Batman nerdiness continues. Star Wars costumes are rarer these days, though.

I can't stand older kids who aren't in costumes and expect me to give them candy. GTFO.

I live out in the country. Many years ago when my youngest brother was in school we got tons of kids here. My parents passed away and I'm living in their house now, and I don't get kids at all because no one in the neighborhood with children young enough to trick or treat know me.

I doubt I'll get any. It's generally considered rude here to let your kids trick-or-treat houses you don't know the occupants of, and I don't know anyone with kids within walking distance.
I have some skeleton chocolate lollies "just in case" (ie for me, later) though.

This is our first Halloween at our current apartment complex, so I'm not entirely sure what to expect. The last two years, we had the first floor of a house, with our landlord and his kids upstairs, and my wife and I just set out a cauldron of stuff outside. (The doorbell at that house was absolutely terrifying -- it was basically a high-pitched alarm clock that filled the house, and it scared the shit out of our cats.) The year before that, we were in a four-plex, but our apartment was below ground level, so only the apartments facing the street got any trick-or-treaters. The year before that, I was in a much smaller four-plex, and my apartment was at the front of the house, but it was in a really crummy part of town, so there weren't a ton of kids just roaming about.

This year, we're not expecting much foot traffic, given that we're now in an actual apartment complex (four buildings, 32 units in each). I'm thinking we'll turn the lights off, go out to dinner and get some grocery shopping done.

I'm in a duplex and my door is on the side of the house, so I don't know if kids will even think to come here. They're much more likely to go to my neighbor's door in the front of the house.

The whole Halloween thing doesn't really appeal to me, so I'm going to turn off all lights and go watch the World Series. We don't get many trick or treaters in this neighborhood anyway.

The whole time I lived in apartments, there were never trick or treaters. My first year at my first apartment complex in Cincinnati, I bought candy. But there were no kids anywhere. I kept looking out the windows. Nobody was walking around in costumes. Same goes for when I lived in Maryland.

Last Halloween, we spent the weekend in the city at the condo like we are now. Only one kid showed. We bought few candies for tonight just in case. but we don't expect many. This building is full of rich old ladies waiting to drop dead (it seems an old lady passes away about every other month here).

We'll get two waves again this year. The first wave will be the neighborhood kids which will go for an hour or so. We live in a neighborhood with a lot of kids so it's usually pretty hopping on halloween night.

The second wave will start after 8pm and be made up of kids who have carpooled or bussed to the neighborhood. These kids are mostly older - teens and pre-teens- and put little to no effort into costumes, just going to doors with grocery bags asking for candy.

They also don't know the porch light rule - if the porch light's off, don't ring the bell.

We get TONS of little ones and just a smattering of teens. I don't mind who shows up. They want candy, fine. I do think, however, you should at least have a costume on.

I love looking at all the little ones and their cute little costumes. Most people abide by the porch-light rule. Our neighborhood is apparently a big destination for trick-or-treaters; I've been told by others that it's IMPOSSIBLE to get in once the sun goes down, as the traffic down our main road backs up for miles.

I never left on Halloween, so I had no idea. But we do get a lot of kiddos coming by.

I don't think it will be as busy as previous years, since it's on a Sunday this year and the kids can't stay out as late.

Then again I put a sign on the door saying please don't knock, babies sleeping.

It wasn't as busy this year as last year. I live on a main residential road and had several batches of kids come by, but Halloween hasn't really taken off in England yet. A lot of people throw Halloween parties rather than letting the kids go trick-or-treating. The rule in my neighbourhood is that you ring the doorbell if the lights in the front room of the house are on. This year I had very few under-5s, which is a shame.

I have no upper age limit for giving candy to trick-or-treaters as long as the person has put some effort into the costume. Earlier this evening two teens were taking their much younger sister door-to-door, and even though the teens didn't have candy bags I still gave them some as they were both dressed up. They thanked me profusely, so I don't think anyone else had given them anything.

I'm currently keeping an eye on my kids to make sure they don't eat themselves into sugar comas, especially as they have school tomorrow.

I just hate that our town mandates Trick or Treating times. Kids are only allowed to Trick or Treat between 5-8pm.

We bought quite a bit of candy--I think Hubby is hoping for leftovers, because he bought mostly his favorites. We get local kids and those from other areas, too. I don’t mind if some of the “kids” are taller than me. They’re on the border of being too old, or maybe over the border, but if they’re still in high school, I’m fine with it. They’ll be definitely too old soon enough, so I don’t have a problem with letting them have their last hurrah at childhood.

Since we live on a corner and have a streetlight lighting our whole front yard, we always get the kids.

Ours starts in an hour. I'll be sitting by the door with a bowl full of candy. Last year we got tons of kids. This year I'm hoping for a similar turnout. I give two pieces of candy per kid, but kids in Star Trek or Star Wars outfits get more. A little girl showed up in a TNG uniform last year, phaser and all, and got 10 pieces of candy. I just grabbed a handful of candy and said "boldly go, sweetheart!"

That's usually just a proclamation from City Hall, i.e., "Mayor McCheese has proclaimed that the City's Official Trick or Treat will be from 5 - 8 p.m." It's not a city ordinance.

I realize that, but I still think it's a lame "rule." I don't like the idea of Trick or Treating in the daylight.
