Trek's most credible contentions

Just a counterpoint to the ridiculous contentions thread...

That humans in general will be wary, even fearful, of aliens (various ENT episodes). The exception will be Star Trek fans who have been waiting for this all our lives! ;)

That as well as being wary of aliens, humans will also be pretentious dolts who view the universe as their own private playground.

I just wish I could see it in my lifetime...
Credible Contention: That given the right training & education man can rise above his limitations to do the right thing.

Suspicion, mistrust and blame towards the first contact species.

The target of hostilities for something we don't know we have done.

Not the most advanced species in the galaxy, not the least advanced either - about average

The military will be in charge of exploration. Eventually, through this key role, the military will be in charge of pretty much everything.

Space wars will be decided in space, yet within visual ranges of planets and stars. Ground combat and engagements in deep interstellar space will play little role.

The energies expended in interstellar travel and space combat will render things like food, air and other life support, in situ fabrication of items and substances, and local transportation trivially cheap and easy in comparison. At least the crews of starships will enjoy truly free lunches.

The people in command of such power will exploit it for political and moralistic leverage, out of direct control of any government. A number of madmen will come to occupy those center seats.

Groups of humans will engage in interstellar colonization principally for the reason of getting away from what they see as oppression at home. Such groups will include those of luddite persuasion.

Miniskirts will be part of both civilian and military fashion time and again.

People in the future will be vastly more wealthy than those of today, and will take as basic comfort standards which look luxurious to us.

Every time we find a new tool for examining the universe we will run across wondrous things we never imagined could be before.

The deepest political debates of today will seem quaint and even difficult to understand, where they don't appear foolish, in time.

Humans are going to fall in love with things that don't appear remotely to be people -- and some of them will return the feeling.

People will have big, ambitious dreams that run a considerable risk of failure, and pursue them anyway. Most of these will not involve destroying the universe.
