TrekBBS vs. the Music

I couldn't hear the lyrics on the SoaD song; something has to be very clear for me to be able to actually make out what the singer is saying. But overall, that is a band I stay away from because I know they DO get political.

I am not really much of a fan of either of these bands...but I also don't hate either. I just found this rendition to lack inspiration. I'm glad two big named bands turned out to support the Saints (hopefully for free :p )...but I feel they were capable of better.

I actually think the studio version is better - definitely seems more rehearsed for one - but I like the pageantry and the trumpets of the live version.

Ah! So U2 and Green Day actually recorded this together in the studio? Perhaps maybe for a benefit for Katrina/New Orleans or something? As I said, I don't really follow either band much...although Green Day is maybe slightly more on my radar than is U2 lately (but only slightly, which is to say "I know they still exist as a band" )... I liked Green Day in the 90's when they first came out...but now they sort of blend into the background for me. And I've not really been a fan of U2 since, like, the late 80's or something.

AJ - I really am going to listen to more of Cage the Elephant. I have actually favorited that one song you posted over at YouTube, have played it a few times, and am now more than mildly curious as to what they have come up with otherwise. If you have particular suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

James Brown (just to have a non-single)

Back Against the Wall

And the single off their new album (shows a bit difference in style, imo):
Shake Me Down.

Hey, thanks, AJ! Meant to tell you that I watched these. I actually found Shake Me Down (it had alot of views, so I could tell it was a single off the new one) and Back Against The Wall (ditto, only I think this is from the first record - I REALLY like this one!) on my own, but I listened to the other one also and like that one too.

This weekend, I ordered the first record from Amazon and read the user reviews for the second record. Seems the second record is not as popular...but it also seems that this is because people expected 'more of the same' and didn't always get it. And that is not necessarily a deterrent for me. Nothing makes me more annoyed than the idiots on YouTube who bitch because they think every single Pearl Jam album for the last 20 years should sound exactly like Ten...and because they all don't, Pearl Jam "sucks". If bands don't grow and change, they start to sound really stale...and often dated and 'stuck' as well. So the fact that CtE did some style switching on their sophomore effort is not necessarily a bad thing, in my book. But I'll give the first album a few turns and see if I like them well enough to continue following them more hard core. But I have quite enjoyed what I have heard so far!

Yeah, there's a studio version of "The Saints Are Coming" with a video - it sounds better, but the video's just alright IMO.

Heh, fair enough. :techman:

Westminster Cathedral Choir: Funeral Ikos
Hey, this is cool. I'd never heard of John Tavener and kinda wondered if this was something much older than it actually is. Imagine my surprise that it was composed within the last 50 years. In the best tradition of liturgical-sounding music, the piece is very minimalistic and the voices carry the entire song. I thought at first they weren't singing in English but then started to pick up a few words and went and looked it up. Very beautiful overall, not something you'd play at just any time but is perfect when the mood strikes. Wiki tells me Tavender is heavily influenced by his Orthodox Christian faith - this isn't the sort of worship music you'd expect for a regular Sunday morning service, but as a performance - or even better for an occassion like a funeral, it would be excellent. I wonder if it's been used for for any soundtracks? 9/10

Umineko no naku koro ni BGM - deadangle (Really not sure on the title for this one, sorry)
One of the top comments mentions this is "probably one of my favorite tracks from the game" so I'm guessing that's where it comes from? This piece is very atmospheric, it feels like somebody searching for something or perhaps some sort of traveling montage. Nice easy listening music, it never gets terribly loud and fills up the background nicely. It's not bad but definitely works best as a background piece and not something to listen to specifically for itself 6/10

The Son of Flynn - Tron OST Heavy Version
Do I detect... a theme? ;) Although also a soundtrack song, this one caught my attention quite a bit more and I enjoyed focusing on it. The sense of rising action through the song works in its favor - you've always got the drums and the... umm... electronic sounds?... as background, but the guitar plays nicely against it. To be honest, the guitar was a bit screechier than i was expecting, and I might have preferred if it were a bit more low-key, but overall the piece works very well. Still a good background piece, but also worth focusing on. 8/10

1. The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Very cool. Like the song, like the group, like the video. I always thought these guys had some originality to them - always a plus with me. Was sad to hear of their official breakup...although I think everyone knew that was coming for some time. 9/10

2. Halo Theme - Corpomix
I assume this is from the game Halo, which I don't play. Might help if I actually played the game so I'd have something to associate it with besides a bunch of people playing electronic instruments in somebody's living room.

Still, it's a pretty interesting theme, as computer game themes go. 7/10

3. Paramore - The Only Exception
Nothing to dislike here, I don't guess. But admittedly, this is another of those groups I have actively avoided under my American Idol Effect assumption that if everyone loves them so much, they just gotta suck. As you can tell, I have very little confidence in John Q. Public (especially these days) to popularize decent music. :p

Anyway, the song is just fine. I don't love it...but then I don't hate it either. Sort of a radio-friendly alt rock/pop ballad kind of thing that is pleasant enough to listen to, but ultimately fairly forgettable. Nothing original about these guys that I can see - nothing to make me rush out and buy their records, or even investigate them more (like I did with CtE). Although I suppose that I should listen to some other songs to make a final determination. 6/10

Regarding Paramore - their "normal" sound is pop-punk; "Misery Business" is probably the best example of it. What frustrates me about them is that while I normally like that style of music, many of their songs don't do it for me, but I think their lead singer has one of the best voices in pop music today - and does a really good Patsy Cline, too.

Yes, I agree she has a very good voice. That, too, was one of my frustrations - such a fabulous voice coupled with such an utterly mainstream-forgettable song.

I will check out Misery Business, since she does have such a great voice, and I'd hate to miss out on something special, simply because that one song was kind of standard radio fare.

Cool. :techman: After seeing that YouTube of "You Ain't Woman Enough" I've come to the conclusion that Hayley Williams is probably a better country singer than half of the Nashville crowd, which amuses me more than it should I think.

ETA: Which for the pop music scene (and any punk/rock shades it drifts into), a genuinely good singer is a fair rarity. Gaga's got a good voice, but Katy Perry? Ke$ha? No.

Okay - checked out Misery Business, and that is a much better song. Still sort of mainstream...but a mainstream that is alot closer to the overall style of music I like, so I liked it better for that reason.

They really do sound pretty good. Better than most new bands coming out, I'll grant them that. She is an excellent singer, and this song had a drive to it that I liked.

But still...this band makes me feel sort of restless. Like I know they have the talent to do something really great - IF they get some songwriting talent behind them that gives them some sort of edge.

Does that make any sense?

Not sure if it has been in any movies. I have a PM coming your way, though...

The lyrics are from the Orthodox funeral for priests, as I recall--so that is exactly what it is intended for. If you're interested in any other songs of his, let me know and I can give you some recommendations.

I have not played the game--but that's what it is, background music for a game. Some of the other pieces from that game can be kind of obnoxious, but that one is a favorite. :)

Oh, awesome, glad to hear. It's always cool when I can introduce a good band to new people (especially when it's a modern band, even I don't generally have enough faith in modern music for that ;) ). Yeah, the second album's biggest surprise is that it's very different. For the most part it is good and I only listened to it once. I do think it was a touch repetitive, though. All the songs sounded fairly similar to Shake Me Down, so it was hard to pick out a favorite.

Anyway, review time:

The Dead Milkmen - Methodist Coloring Book
Woot, punk! I think I've heard them once before on Philly radio. Nice bit of biting wit. I like the instrumental aspects as well. Luckily I like punk or else I'd probably comment on the vocal style, but it works qutie well. I'll definitely check them out some more. 4/5

Opshop - Madness and Other Allergies
I think this is the best complementing of music and vocals together. I had a fear that this band was going to be another Breaking Benjamin, but it really works well. Sort of a bit of electronica in there too. 4/5

The Gits - Second Skin
See my woot punk comment earlier. Definitely a significant Bad Religion vibe here. It chugs along but also seems quite aggressive. Just fun to listen to, I think the chorus is going to be stuck in my head all day. 5/5

Three songs I really haven't heard before, three great ratings. I'm really impressed here. :techman:

Some comments here:

1. The Dead Milkmen have a bunch of songs like that - I think that kind of wit was their specialty. And yeah, the singer does not have what I would call a trained voice, by any means...but I think that's part of their charm. His voice is really pretty perfect for the kind of songs they sing. I mean, do a search on YouTube for 'Dead Milkmen' and here are some of the titles that come up:
Thing That Only Eats Hippies
Bitchin' Camaro
If You Love Someone, Set Them On Fire :guffaw:
I Dream of Jesus
Taco Land/Big Lizard in My Backyard

Intrigued? I know that I am!

2. Opshop is a band that is apparently huge in New Zealand. I'd never heard of them before yesterday, but I do really like them and plan to listen to more of their stuff. And they have some really excellent production values to their videos, too. Check this one out; it was a toss up as to whether I was going to post this one or the one I posted as my pick:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g716tEm0yl0&feature=relmfu

3. The Gits were a great band, and one of the more tragic stories from the early 90's Seattle scene. This is a band that could have been HUGE, and probably would have been, were it not for the horrific rape and murder of Mia Zapata, the awesome lead singer you see in that video, in the summer of 1993. They eventually caught the guy, years later, thanks to a DNA hit when the scumbag was arrested for some other crime. But such a tragedy - especially since the buzz was definitely that The Gits were going to break out on their next record, which was due for release shortly after her death.

I posted another of their songs earlier in this thread, but that was quite a while ago, so I thought I'd post another. This is a band, and a singer, that deserves to be remembered, IMO.

Ha! I would LOVE to review these songs, but I will resist, for the time being, in order to give someone else a chance (but they better not wait too long or I will be on job! :techman: ). As you would imagine, I know and love the first song beyond all reason - in fact, I have one of that band's other songs on a Firefox tab for possible use in this thread (maybe not, now). And I also know and quite like #2 as well (I thought one of their songs was posted earlier, maybe even by me? Maybe not?). Hadn't heard #3, but that one is another winner, IMO. Still...when I opened #1, I was, like, YES! :techman:

We discussed them several times, but I did a search and they didn't come up with a link to a song.

Maybe I posted a song from Myles Kennedy's previous band then - The Mayfield Four? I dimly remember having a bunch of tabs open for AB and TM4, trying to decide what to post...

In any event, I like both a lot! Great picks! :)

Yoink!

1. Soundgarden - Burden in My Hand

Well, frankly, the best Soundgarden song, from the best Soundgarden album in my opinion. This track is just huge, from Cornell's tortured wail to Thayil's southern guitar twang developing into something bruising and dirty. I love it.

2. Alter Bridge - One Day Remains

I quite like this band, and this is a good song, rather uplifting, makes you want to run around. Holy shit, can that guy play or what, this is one of the most brutal riffs ever written! I hope Miles Kennedy ditches Slash and continues to work with this band.

3. The Refreshments - Banditos

This song sounds fresh today still despite being 15 years old. Funny lyrics too, I do like it. This song got absolutely nowhere in the UK IIRC, and is probably the only song anyone will remember from this band sadly. I would recommend the whole album to anyone reading this, a real slice of Americana.

1. Screaming Trees "Sworn And Broken"

Haven't heard before...I think...sounds familiar but I don't listen to this band. It starts kinda mellow and picks up. Video is unusual. Not bad. Are the Screaming Trees indy rock? C-Ok/Average.

2. Battles "Atlas"

Haven't heard before. Wow this is some strange stuff. Not feeling it. That box thing they are in reminds me of the phantom zone crystal thing. D-Bad.

3. GUN "Better Days"

Haven't heard before. Very rock sounding. Not too bad. C-Ok/Average.

 Well, that's okay. You reviewing them basically falls into the category of 'saves me the effort', since I agree with pretty much everything you said. Except for maybe the comment about Soundgarden's best album. I'd go with Superunknown, but Down on the Upside pulls a close second in my book.

I know all the cool kids in the grunge fanbase prefer their earliest albums, but I don't care. I'm perfectly happy loving their big label efforts. :D

And I'm with you on Alter Bridge too. I really like those guys and hope they continue to work together.

The Trees are actually another of those pesky Seattle grunge bands you love for us to post ;) ....although I consider them to be on the melodic side of that very diverse grunge 'label'.

I quite possibly posted another of their songs, but it would have been very early in this thread - these guys are a 'go to' band for me, so I can't imagine I'd have overlooked an opportunity to pimp them. I love these guys. :techman:

EDIT: Yep. Pretty much as I thought - I posted one of their songs in my very first post in this thread, in fact...way back on page 2. And you reviewed that one also, Jetfire. Now that was way back in January (jeez, have we really been doing this that long??? )...but that might be why these guys sound vaguely familiar. They do have a fairly unique sound, IMO.
