At the Australian Film Industry awards held last night, Eric Bana won Best Actor for Romulus, My Father, which also won Best Film, as well as the Herald Sun Reader's Choice award - voted on by readers of Australia's widest-circulated papers.

I've yet to see any mention of Star Trek in the reporting of it, with articles mentioning that he is returning to filming of another film in Toronto.

Well, he probably works on lots of stuff. No reason to point out Star Trek in particular....

Remember, he is not a primarily scifi actor.

Quite. When I think Eric Bana, I think Avner in Munich. I think I'll probably still think Avner in Munich after I've seen this movie. Eric Bana was an up and coming star at one point, what with Troy and Hulk, as well. He's the got the largest role in this film for a well known actor, assuming one discounts Leonard Nimoy.

But hey, a respected and talented actor is playing the villain. It's just like Tom Hardy, his Black Hawk Down co-star, in Nemesis. Or F. Murray Abraham in Insurrection. Or Malcolm McDowell in Genesis... you get the idea. ;)

Bana started out here popularly-known as an actor in a hit comedy troupe on TV, "Fast Forward", doing impersonations of our local politicians, TV presenters and Hollywood actors.

It'll be funny if Nero does turn out to be a Romulan because the movie Eric Bana just won the AFI for is called "Romulus, My Father".

Frankly, even if Nero isn't a Romulan one can still make the Roman connection and thusly find it amusing. :)

Out of curiosity, what is this award-winning film about?

True, but it is a relatively high-profile role which he should begin filming on shortly. There were quite a few articles in Australian papers when he was originally announced, but I was hoping for something here.

It's based on Raimond Gaita’s memoir, essentially a tale of immigrants struggling to raise their son in rural Australia. A very impressive film, with an excellent performance from Bana.

This is how things work in Trekdom. People will go out of their way to make a Trek association, i.e. the "news releases" on here, like calling Ashley Judd a TNG actress. If Christian Slater were still getting quality movie roles, the releases here would be titled "Excelsior crewman Slater lands role in Ridley Scott movie."

My all time favourite was when Douglas Hyde Pierce won a Tony. Readers were reminded that he once was on a Voyager skit with Kate Mulgrew and the rest of the Frasier cast.

That one skit over a decade ago, and he's Star Trek news.

Given that he has had few high-profile roles in the past, has a major involvement in an upcoming Star Trek film and is set to begin filming shortly, it's hardly unreasonable to hope for some mention.

Incidentally, Chris Hemsworth is mentioned in today's Sunday Herald Sun for:

picking up a plum role as the father of Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek blockbuster.

"I don't know what to say. I got lucky, I guess - right place, right time. I pinch myself the whole time," Hemsworth said.
