Trek XI Enterprise speculation?

As we all know, the Trek XI Enterprise is a different ship from the TOS enterprise. They’re hints the Nero-created timeline is responsible. Now the question that won’t likely be answered until we see the movie in May is, did Starfleet simply speed up their R&D after Nero destroyed the Kevlin that otherwise would have been done post-TMP, or did future technology come into the hands of starfleet that enabled than to make a more advanced ship? Heck, maybe time traveling Spock pulled an Admiral Janeway. The nuTrek Enteprise probably has enhaned weapons and shields, maybe even an enhaned warp drive?

I'm sorry, but perhaps I will feel myself more qualified to answer this question on May 9, 2009...

I have heard some speculate that ever since First Contact that the time line has been contaminated after the crew from TNG helped with Chocrane's first warp flight. So the series Star Trek Enterprise can also be viewed as a result of this altered time line and this new Enterprise is a progression from the NX-01.

^I've been saying this for the ''LONGEST'' Time!

Any of those ideas are possible, as would simply saying that the original Enterprise is too 'basic' for todays movie audience and that both ships are supposed to be the same and its just visual changes for the next next next next generation.

Personally I'm hoping for a massively altered timeline. Spock might not have a choice but to interfere more than he knows he should.

Well, we don't actually. All we know is that its appearance to our eyes is different, but there has been much speculation along the lines you've suggested here, and even some which goes much farther afield.

The timelines will converge in the film's third act and the two ships Enterprise will encounter each other, whereupon nuKirk and nuSpock will mock the proportions, design principles, and general lack of apparent spaceworthiness of the old Enterprise before destroying it with a volley of turret-mounted phaser fire.

For all we know.. For the purposes of this film, the Enterprise might have been built for the specific purpose of fighting Nero. The idea becomes that the crew that we know and love assemble for this task being the seed for the beginning of the relationships we see in the original show.

The Enterprise is always "the only ship in the quadrant" to save the universe and everything.. It seems reasonable to assume that the ship could have been "created" and built for this purpose.

Something to think about.

NNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!:scream:

It's the same ship, as far as I'm concerned. It just looks different. (Ever noticed how Robin Curtis looked nothing like Kirstie Alley, by the way?)

Of course that's just my take on it. We will know when we see it. :techman:

*Nero commandeers the old enterprise*

Nero: FIRE EVERYTHING!!!!!

*New Enterprise destroys the old Enterprise anyway, good guys win the movie but destroy the franchise*

Ditto. I have added that the NX-01 may have been named something else until the alterations in FC. After that, point, and in that altered future, the NX-01 was named Enterprise by Cochrane when he worked with Henry Archer on its W5 engine.

But perhaps Zephram Cochrane simply remembered the first space shuttle (which was rolled out on September 17, 1976, and which was originally planned to be named 'Constitution') when he had to pick a name for the NX-01? You know, something like art imitating life imitating art? ;)

*prays* please dont be the same ship, please dont be the same ship, please dont be the same ship...

But, you see, it IS the same ship. It's the Constitution class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. Just like how those bumpy-headed Klingons in TMP were the same Klingons from TOS.

*prays* please blow up the ship and build a new one for the next movie... please blow up the ship and build a new one for the next movie...
