Except ENT's 'rep' wasn't 'tired and cranky' when it was cancelled. The show started out strongly, but dropped of fast; for any non-ST show the lackluster performance from mid-S1 to the end of S2 would've spelled it's doom. But at its lowest creative and critical ebb the Powers That Be decided to try and revamp the show, and after that S3 got slightly better press and S4 was probably as well recieved by the fans as late VOY, at least.
You could maybe make an argument that if Trek fans had been absolutely, positively, fanatically ecstatic about ENT, the show might've managed another season before its poor general performance got it the axe. But the reaction of a few thousand people on the internet by no means spelled the doom of the show.
