Trek two parters

I enjoy modern storytelling with ongoing elements compared to entirely self-enclosed episodes. I enjoy the new Dr Who series but I find the two parters, with more time to develop the story and guest characters are much more enjoyable. There were some shades of this in early Trek, such as the ongoing Klingon hostilities but after watching Discovery, I was wondering which TOS episodes would have been fun to expand and which elements would have been the best ones to include as ongoing plot devices.

As a general rule, I think most episodes that involve the crew exploring planets would be suitable for expansion into two, three, or four parters.

The Naked Time was originally going to be followed up by a time travel story. In fact, they could have had a mini arc with the ship becoming involved in past politics and skirmishes before finding their way back to the future.

Miri could have had shades of the Walking Dead if the teenagers lived longer in their diseased state.

The City on the Edge of Forever had plenty of scope for expansion. A two parter could even have featured space pirates.

The Return of the Archons could have had some additional layers. It was awfully convenient for Landru to be so close by and there was a creepy invasion of the body snatchers vibe going on. Having the landing party gradually absorbed one by one while they try to work out what's happening could have been cool.

Space Seed had lots of potential. Khan could have escaped with a modern ship, leading to a space chase, and possibly even a return in future episodes, perhaps with an expanded multi racial group of followers (no space hippies).

The Savage Curtain could have been fun with a bigger cast of good and evil characters, with a wider variety of alien and Earth figures, more like Battle Royale.

The Enterprise Incident might have been more fun as a more detailed less plot holey Mission Impossible style adventure.

Elaan of Troyus could have included an episode on her homeworld, one on the way to her wedding, and one see her safely up the aisle.

The Cloud Minders could have featured more layers to the political situation.

Are there any bottle episodes that might have been suitable for expansion?

The closest thing we got to ongoing romance in TOS was the Rand and Kirk non-event or Chapel's embarrassing unrequited crush. Are there any other story elements that people would have liked to see developed, including some that might have involved the supporting cast?

Amok Time might have been expandable to 2 parts. At certain points in the episode it seemed kind of rushed....we're at Vulcan, this is my wife, Spock goes love mad, Spock kills Kirk, Kirk is not really dead, everyone laughs.

Specifically, Tomorrow is Yesterday.

The one episode, Tomorrow is Yesterday, did rather well in that regard, IMHO. They just had to come up with a means for the Enterprise to go back in time different from/other than to one in The Naked Time.

While I love the alien mystery of Amok Time, they could probably have kept the ball bouncing if Amanda had been McCoy and Kirk's guide, while telling them as little as possible out of respect for her family.

I'm not a huge fan of Tomorrow is Yesterday but it's easy to see how the crew could have blundered into other situations on their way to Earth. I never really understood how repeating the slingshot threw them forward instead of further back though!

^^^Clockwise one trip, counterclockwise the other. :D Don't actually know if this is how they showed it in TVH or the remastered version of TIY.

I think "Mirror, Mirror" could've easily been a two-parter, with one part showing the evil crew trying to blend in in our regular universe. Surely they were able to put up a pretense for at least a little while before Spock caught on?

I think And the Children easily Shall Lead could have been improved if they had spent more time on the planet, with a few people dying, with an atmosphere more akin to Sapphire and Steel or Village of the Damned. Less fist pumping too.

It might have been cool to start off in our universe with Kirk and Co behaving oddly and don't explain why until two thirds of the way through, then switch focus to the mirror universe. Who wouldn't have loved to see mirror Uhura and Scotty being all bad ass?

Thinking about it, Charlie X could have been spread out as an arc, with him being a passenger over several episodes, maybe using his powers discretely to help the heroes win a few times before going crazy.

I vote for this one as well. In particular I would've liked to have seen how quickly Spock deduces what has happened and how quickly he is able to take control from "Mirror Kirk". Apparently it was pretty dang quick. And Spock apparently all on his own (without the help of Scotty of course given I doubt Mirror Scotty would've assisted) figured out how to beam the Mirror Kirk, McCoy, Scotty, and Uhura back.

But in reality it was probably pretty obvious from the get go. When Mirror Kirk stepped out of the Transporter after a rough beam up probably wanted to use an agonizer on Kyle but not finding one simply punched the unfortunate chief out.

Possible, but I'd like to think that Mirror-Kirk was a bit smarter and craftier than that. I'm sure you don't manage to assassinate a Captain and assume command of one of the Empire's starships without being a little crafty.

Certainly the speed and ease with which the mirror landing party were found out was a story convenience in the actual episode. There was lots of potential to portray it differently if they'd wanted to play the situation out more. Sudden lapses in character wouldn't necessarily have gotten the captain sniffed out as an imposter and thrown in the brig...see "Turnabout Intruder."

The pacing of most TOS episodes was perfect to me. Not sure I'd really would have wanted them expanded.

Exactly. Many times, in various TV series, I've noticed an episode dragging out the plot with nothing much happening because it was a two-part episode, and they didn't have enough story to justify it. The worst offender is Wonder Woman "Mind Stealers from Outer Space."

....or the hour long original Twilight Zone episodes. Even Rod Serling protested, but the network wanted expanded TZ.

I agree up to a point but I find most modern Doctor Who episodes to be too rushed. I would also say that the single episode format encouraged them to repeat themselves, finding convenient solutions to wrap everything up neatly.

The premise of the thread is that there were some where additional elements could have been added or padded with ongoing elements that pay off further down the line. I think there are a few episodes where the existing plot could just have been stretched but there are some where it feels like potential is left unexplored.

I think this has been proven wrong. Where's @Harvey at?

“The Naked Time” was conceived and initially shot as Part 1 of a 2-parter, but it had been tweaked into a standalone tale (in editing and a minor reshoot) and aired before D.C. Fontana wrote the first story outline for “Tomorrow Is Yesterday.”

Fontana’s story obviously sprung from ideas laied out by John D.F Black in “The Naked Time,” but it was always conceived as a standalone.

The pacing of most TOS episodes was perfect to me. Not sure I'd really would have wanted them expanded.

To be honest, some episodes if anything are too long — Twilight Zone length stories stretched out to fit an hour long timeslot (not unlike what happened during the fourth season of Serling’s show).

While I was an advocate of further fleshing out "Mirror, Mirror," I have found this to be the more common situation on the show.

Television back in the day was much better than we get today in my opinion! Story lines which are dragged out more in the line of a serial than a series annoy the hell out of me! In Trek we got a complete story each and every week which was well written, paced and executed so that it didn't really need a second episode!
