Now we just need someone to do a cover version with those lyrics.

I thought about doing that as I have the karaoke orchestration for that song, but I'm not a particularly good singer ... then again that might just add to the charm of the thing.

Now, if only I could find an mp3 of George Takei laughing to tack on to the end, it would be perfect!

Most of the hardware vocoders are simple devices that superimpose one waveform (usually vocal) onto another (usually synth). And you have to be playing, on your instrument, the same notes you're singing.

I think they're referring specifically to auto-tune.

Nope, it's on the mic line in the rack as you sing. People use it in live performances just as much as on their cds.
