Trek titles on Steam/GoG?

I'd have thought games like Armada, Elite Force etc would be good sellers..

{{{{NOTE, THE ORIGINAL POSTER CREATED THIS THREAD BEFORE STEAM DID ACTUALLY PUT SOME OF THE OLDER TREK GAMES ON IT. THEREFORE THIS THREAD STARTED TO BECOME A DISCUSSION THREAD BASED ON THOSE GAMES....}}}}

Re: Why no Trek titles on Steam/GoG?

I have no doubt that the games would require to resolve the massive amount of copyright issues between all parties involved, Interplay, Activision, Paramount, CBS, and all the other red tape that sits on said games, and i that were not enough somebody would have to pay to get them to work on todays systems.

Re: Why no Trek titles on Steam/GoG?

I bought the NuTrek movie game from Steam.... Its probably due to the games beign designed for old versions of Windows and them not wanting to be liable for software bugs on modern machines.

GOG handles all that for the developers, though.

I'm pretty sure that Haggis and tatties has the right of it: the publishers no longer have the licenses, and it would require a lot of red tape to be sorted out to republish those games.

Re: Why no Trek titles on Steam/GoG?

I have Armada II, Bridge Commander, Starfleet Academy, Klingon Academy (somewhere), and Starship Creator II, and I would love to see them updated for modern systems, as the ones I have require patches, mods, and such.

What about the good ones, like the 25th Anniversary and Judgement Rights? Those are worth their weight in gold.

What is more annoying is that i just got the GOG versions of Xwing and Tie fighter, star wars games, and they run flawlessly on my PC(W8 and all that), so i imagine GOG could do wonders on getting the Star Trek games to run on todays systems.

And too add to my annoyance, look at all the power we have now in PCs and consoles, can you imagine Star Trek games now like Armada 3, Bridge commander 2, Star fleet command, all running on 1080p, Dx11, and what do we have, nothing, star trek gaming dead......oh i why oh why.

That's exactly it.

Resolving licensing issues is perfectly doable, but it is a non-trivial task that takes a lot of time and money. The audience for your average Star Trek game is by far not sizable enough to justify the effort.

Re: Why no Trek titles on Steam/GoG?

Yes, the old Trek games are basically licensing hell. That and getting many of them to work on modern PCs can be difficult. Also they don't reflect the current vision of the franchise.

You're a good Tholian. :)

Re: Why no Trek titles on Steam/GoG?

I never thought I'd see it. GOG.com really have a knack for getting hard-to-get licenses.

All Interplay titles so far. I hope they can work things out with Activision/Atari/Simon & Schuster etc. in the future.

Re: Why no Trek titles on Steam/GoG?

There was a splash screen when I loaded 25th that had only CBS copyrights at the bottom for 2015. Maybe CBS bought the rights from whatever's left of Interplay?

Well. I'm wrong. :D

We were all wrong, but in this case it's nice to be wrong, could we see Klingon academy soon. :):)

But it will be interesting to see if they have anything from Activision coming.

^^Yeap. lol

I am really enjoying these, great to hear the original casts voices after all these years again.

Re: Why no Trek titles on Steam/GoG?

Many thanks T'Bonz for posting about this in Trektoday Headlines, otherwise I would have had no idea.

Played Star Trek : 25th last night for the first time in what must be twenty years. It is still a lot of fun, and so wonderful to hear De Kelley in particular. Already I've had Bones telling me off for being trigger happy, and, alas, my poor redshirt did not make it back to the ship

I'd forgotten most of the plot, so "Demon World" took me a good two hours to play through.

Limiting myself to one mission per session. So much fun. Download it now!

Re: Why no Trek titles on Steam/GoG?

It would be fantastic if GoG did "A Final Unity" and (now that Windows 8.1 will no longer allow me to play them) the Starfleet Command series of games... I've supported the Trek games on GoG by purchasing them and they work fantastically well on my new system...

I still have the CDs but because it was clunky for me to play them using Dosbox, I hadn't played them for a long time...

Re: Why no Trek titles on Steam/GoG?

I must admit this is great news - havign someone run teh game on their processors to get over any modern Windows capability issues and then just streaming the gaming content is a great idea. This is a great idea to get some new Trek gamers involved, without the numerious drivers, Direct X issues etc.

I hope they get succsess and run all the other games in the same way! :)
