Trek returns to Vasquez Rocks

Trekmovie.com is reporting that one of the locations for the new movie shoot will be Vasquez Rocks in the Southern California desert! That's where Kirk fought the Gorn in TOS. It has appeared many times in Trekistory. For some reason, this news excites me. Hallowed ground, and all that.

It's also where Blll & Ted were killed by their evil robot selves in "...Bogus Journey" (which also used a big chunk of "Arena" featuring The Shat earlier in the film). :)

Well, I'm going to spy on 'em with google earth. I'm sure I'll find something...
You do understand that those aren't live snapshots, right? They're only updated periodically (long periods), and desert and other largely uninhabited regions only very rarely.

Sigh...one more for the checklist of hopeless self-referentialness.

I waiting... sure enough some would find a reason to complain.

This is nothing if not a bit of harmless fun, not at all hurtful or shall in no way detract from the presentation of the movie. Only most of us on this board will even notice depending of course what planet its standing in for. Wouldn't be interesting if it stood in for itself? ;)

Considering that they will be shooting parts of this movie in Iceland where no Trek movie has shot before, I think it'll get a great homage to the past series to visit such a familiar place as well. :)

^Iceland? Really? I hadn't heard that. Damn good news! Hell, this would be the first time a Star Trek movie has ever shot outside of the western United States. And only the 5th time that they've ever shot anything outside of California.

(IIRC, the previous 4 non-California excursions were...
Aerial shots of Alaska with stand-ins for Kirk, McCoy, & Martia for some of the Rura Penthe wide shots in The Undiscovered Country.
Valley of Fire, Nevada serving as Dr. Soran's base on Veridian III in Generations.
Arizona's Titan Missile Museum serving as Zephram Cochrane's Montana missile complex in First Contact.
And I think some of the Baku planet was shot amidst the Colorado Rockies for Insurrection.)

Well, I guess it's officially Star Trek now.

Amen! Just as, great as it is, the new Doctor Who wasn't really Doctor Who until this past season's "Utopia" when they finally used an old quarry as an alien planet! :D

I think I said this in another thread a few weeks ago, but how much fun would it be if Vasquez Rocks were finally portraying... Vasquez Rocks? Maybe a cadet training exercise in the Southern California desert...

Cadet Mitchell: Why do we always train here?
Instructor Kirk: Federation studies have shown an unusually high number of planets have rock formations similar to this one.

It'd be a fun scene. :)

Add one more, Yellowstone National Park where Mammoth Hot Springs stood in for Gol on Vulcan in TMP.

Yep! I think this was discussed back in August? I found an article about it here. According to it they'll be shooting there for two weeks. I'm really excited about it too.

Edit: Here's the TrekBBS article about it which is far better:

Aww...that's disappointing. I hope we'll get some neat locations that we haven't seen before even if Iceland doesn't work out.

True enough, but the area around Vasquez Rocks hasn't been largely uninhabited since a short few years after Star Trek's last location shoot there. It's quite populated, these days, and the freeway goes right past the familiar upthrust rock formation we know.

Have a look.

:(

Have you been there M´Sharak? I was 3 years ago. There is a small town nearby but Vasquez Rocks is still a place you have to drive off to. It was 110 degrees in VR and it dropped 15 degrees by the time I reached the town!

This is great news!

I've been by it on the freeway a number of times, more recently, but when I visited the rocks themselves, there was no freeway and really not much of anything until you got to (much smaller than now) Palmdale in one direction and (very small) Newhall and Valencia in the other. I don't recall the exact year, but it was in the early Seventies, before the fortress set was demolished by the county.

So, it would be easy to go there and take some photos of shotting, wouldn´t it?
