News Trek Films Announced At CinemaCon

This news consumes me with ambivalence. Not enough information to know whether I’m even interested, and, I like Star Trek. How did it ever come to this?

What does that mean?
"Two in the works"? Like their Transformer Cinematic universe? That's working out great...
I highly doubt they are making two Trek movies at the same time, nor do I suspect they plan a two-parter after the non-performance of Beyond.
This sounds like "We're writing on two concurring scripts at the same time", which, yeah, has never really worked out creatively or box office-wise (Would YOU give your absolute best if you know there's a 50% chance you're working for the bin?).

Just keep Kirk, Spock and McCoy. That's the key dynamic that is absolutely necessary.

All they need to do is have an extended contract for Pine, Quinto and Urban.

Everyone else on the cast is expendable. In fact, they should bring in some new characters this time around to create some new dynamics with the core Trek trinity. Hopefully more aliens.

STB did fine. Next.

Could this be the "other project" that Nick Meyer was working on?

And how this fits in the new CBS/Paramount merge? Could they swimm on the prime timeline? How far they can go with the copyrights?

So much questions for a positive information.

S.J. Clarkson, who directed episodes of Jessica Jones, The Defenders, and Orange is the New Black, is in negotiations to direct the non-Tarantino film.

EDIT: Looks like it's almost a done deal, and this will be based on the Chris Hemsworth/George Kirk storyline first mentioned almost two years ago.

Picking someone like her, who has done a lot of Netflix shows, might indicate they're going a little leaner with the budgets, which I think might be a good thing since it will lower the box office expectations. This is just speculation on my part.

It was widely reported that Beyond did not do as well as the studio had hoped.
Compared with Into Darkness, which cost almost the same to make, it made about 2/3 as much domestic and also about 2/3 as much worldwide.
And the '09 Star Trek cost less and made more.

When studios see a franchise where the sales keep falling, they blame the franchise not the movies. And while doubling your money looks good to most of us, that was not the return they were expecting from their investment.
Avengers made like five times what it cost, and they wanted it to be like Avengers.

These are the same guys who thought that The Lone Ranger would be a hit because Johnny Depp was in it.

Two films, awesome!

I’m surprised they’re moving forward with more of these considering the last one was a pretty big flop.

It kinda makes sense. The George Kirk Star Trek XIV thing is a seperate property from Tarantino's film. Tarantino will probably stay out of the Kelvinverse altogether, and either adapt his own independent reboot, or a new story in Prime Time (with all new characters).

He has a story he wants to tell, and he wants to tell it in the Star Trek universe, and he has enough clout to do so.

It was not.

Of course they're making more movies based on the most successful version of Trek in the studio's history - the Abrams movies - rather than some fan-favorite notion.
