Trek fans fluent in sign language who'd like to help w/fic research?

Hi,

I was wondering if there are any BBSers who consider themselves strong in use of sign language who would be willing to share their opinions via PM on some ideas I've had for the background work in my fan fiction?

Opinions from hearing, hard-of-hearing, and deaf people are all welcome...in fact, I would appreciate a mix of perspectives. There are also no limits according to particular sign language you're familiar with, or how you prefer to sign (ASL, BSL, PSE, any other signed communication welcome): again, I am open to all perspectives and would love to have a mix.

If you are interested, please feel free to either let me know by posting in this thread or sending a PM! :)

Thanks! :)

I used to be fairly decent at SEE (Signing Exact English), but it's been years and I've forgotten a lot. It's not a terribly common sign language, but I'm willing to help out if I can. ASL is more prominent in the area I live in, but I've never been able to grasp the syntax. (I'm hearing, but I live in an area with a large deaf community.)

I'm "hearing," neither deaf nor hard-of-hearing, but I do have some experience with Deaf Culture and Sign Language from my summers as a Counselor at the Wisconsin Lions Camp. My sign isn't super strong, but I was functional when I worked there, and I've retained enough to be a "go between" when I find myself in public place where communication between a hearing person and a non-hearing person has come to a standstill.

You can feel free to send questions my way. Bear in mind that my knowledge is limited and is still from the perspective of an hearing outsider.

I have kept in contact with some of my comrades from my summers working at Lions Camp, and I could probably get answers from them for any questions that don't get answered here.

I can tell you that Sign is dialectical. The common sign for "football" in Wisconsin is the same as the common sign for "group sex" in Indiana. So, sometimes you need to do a little bit of research on dialectical signs when you're outside of your area. I'm sure it's a tad interesting to be a freshman at Gallaudet.

As I said, I shall consider all opinions and perspectives valid, and hope to gather a diverse assortment for consideration. :)

Well, since I asked the night crew, I'm just gonna bump this this one time to ask the day crew, and then I'll leave it at that. ;)
