THIS VERY SHORT STORY TAKES PLACE NEAR THE END OF SEASON SIX OF DS9
Benjamin Sisko knew there was trouble ahead. He had come down to Quarks for relaxation. He had brought a very special holodec program; Jazz Greats.
Jazz music was still popular in the 24th century. And recently several programs were made that had re-created some of the better Jazz artists of Earth’s early to mid 20th century.
Sisko had ordered the Louis Armstrong collection. The moment Jake had notified him of the package’s arrival earlier in the day, Sisko spent the rest of his shift in eager anticipation.
Once his shift was over he left his command office and headed to his quarters. Several officers had attempted small talk with him, but he dismissed them as quickly as he could. He got to his quarters, got the program, and went off to Quark’s.
At first there was the problem of missing his reservation. His work day had gone longer than expected, and at first Quark didn’t care. He told Sisko to make another reservation. But Sisko was not having any of that. He reminded Quark about a shipment of Crygeiran Squid that Quark had promised a very wealthy customer. Such a shipment could be delayed, thus causing delay of payment to Quark.
After seeing it his way, Quark allowed Sisko to use one of the new Holosuites that had yet to be officially opened. (Or quality tested, which Quark didn’t mention to Sisko).
So there was Sisko. Finally sitting in a Holosuite generated jazz club. The smoky atmosphere was so realistic. The crowd was a buzz as the announcer took the stage.
Sisko was decked out in an all black suit, with a red bow tie. The rest of the crowd was decked out as well. This was a special event.
The lights dimmed. The crowd’s mummer faded. And finally the spotlight came to life. The announcer’s voice dug into the scene.
“Ladies and Gentlemen!!”
Sisko stood up as the rest of the crowd did as well.
The announcer continued. “The one and only!!”
Everyone began to clap.
“BARRY MANILOW!!”
Sisko’s eyes almost popped out of his head. “What the (BLEEP)”
