News Trek Author David Mack working on Lower Decks and another animated Trek series

Now it can be told (because my agent secured me permission from the production company): I am excited to be working as a consultant on two new Star Trek animated TV series — Lower Decks, and another whose details remain classified. And that's all I can say about that.

This is really cool news for those who like his books.

I really should have put consultant in the title.

I'm kind of interested about this "other one" he speaks of. Since the "details remain classified" I guess we can infer that he's not talking about the Nickelodeon one about teenagers finding their own abandoned Starfleet ship. So, I guess that would mean there's a third animated series in development?

First I've heard of that. I thought Lower Decks was the Nickelodeon show.

He is obviously talking about the Nickelodeon show. Kurtzman has talked about it but they haven't officially announced the title or the premise. And this was kind of confirmed with this response from the creators of the Nickelodeon Trek show:

I'm not a fan of his Trek novels, but it's certainly helpful to have someone with a wide knowledge of Trek in such a role.

This is great news! It would have been cool if he was also writing for the shows. I really enjoy his books. Having someone so well versed in Trek will be an asset to the teams, even if its just as a consultant.

Two great episodes. I am intrigued by the classified series. Also the more I hear about Lower Decks the more I am surprisingly looking forward to it.

David Mack himself has now confirmed in the Trek Lit forum the classified series is indeed the previously announced Nickelodeon series.

It wasn't meant to be that mysterious. The second project is the Hageman Brothers' kids' animated Star Trek series being produced for Nickelodeon.

Oh ok. I’m on a trip at the moment so my news gathering is (blissfully) limited.

I'm not a fan of his Trek novels, but it's certainly helpful to have someone with a wide knowledge of Trek in such a role.

But the showrunner still sets the stage, so to speak, regarding vision and layout, story needs, and so on. Fans of his books may or may not like what's translated to screen - which isn't his fault just because he'd penned the script.

He's not writer, just a consultant. Meaning the writers ask him things, but they don't need to listen to what he says.

I do wonder if they consulted with David for the whole “Section 31 Control” arc in Discovery given this concept was effectively from his S31 book.
