Trek and Child Birth

Having a discussion with my brother today.

What do you guys think...

Do women go through labor or are babies beamed out? Seems to me that the whole going through child birth won't be necessary in the future...

Women in Trek's time probably have a lot of choices to consider regarding child birth. Some probably prefer to have a natural birth, others may opt for a high tech way of going about it. Hopefully nothing as creepy as those two droids at the end of Revenge of the Sith though.

Actually, transporting them out isn't a bad idea; Beam the little brats straight down to a planet, You can never get 'em on an away mision too soon. :thumbsup:

I suppose it's like today where many mothers choose to forgo the epidural, even though it means a HELL of a LOT more pain. Some may not like the idea of a baby being transported for cultural or (dare I say in a Trek discussion?) religious reasons. As for Keiko's delilvery, it was an emergency situation, so the transporter wasn't even an option. Eleen was from a primitive, alien world and an emergency situation, so the transporters weren't an option.

Since it only happened once onscreen IIRC (Naomi), I think the beam out is only a last resort technique when everything else fails. Why use such a potentially dangerous action when a normal birth works fine? I certainly don't want to know what happens when the mother has a contraction or just moves because of the pain at the moment of the beamout.

DS9 established that it's extremely difficult to transport a fetus out of a pregnant woman's womb and that natural childbirth is preferable.
