TREK 100 years from now

It will probably become less popular when people go out to the stars for real. Especially since that would contradict what's on the fictional show.

Maybe the mainstream broadcasts of that era would look like some form of Star Trek to us if we could see them today. A typical sitcom might take place in houses, apartments, etc. with interior decor similar to that of Voyager or at least private dwellings we've seen on Trek.

I dunno. I think since landing on the moon ourselves, Star Trek as served to drive us to the stars. I think Trek will be close to the hearts of those people that are always trying to look a little farther.

War of the Worlds was written over 100 years ago and it is still remembered as one of the foundations of science fiction literature. Indeed, the novel continues to set the tone for all "alien invasion" tales told today. I think in the same way, Star Trek will be remembered as a pinnacle of science fiction and (just as it does today) will continue to influence the way that "space exploration" stories will be told in the future.

I agree. It would be interesting to go into the future, oh, 200 years from now and see if Star Trek is alive. Perhaps it DOES become a religion, and is outlawed! (Futurama did a great job with that!)

The question becomes whether Trek — or any TV, for that matter — will somehow achieve that lofty status of "classic," where it's regarded by succeeding generations as something worthy of continued performance and study.

Suddenly the cliché "It ain't Shakespeare!" takes on new meaning, huh? ;)

Theatre was considered lowbrow in Elizabethan times, and IIRC Shakespeare largely dwelt in obscurity until the 19th century. So maybe Trek will be forgotton in a 100 years, but considered high culture in the 2400s.

And scholars will write theses about how Roddenberry didn't really exist and was just a front for Robert Kennedy...

Hell...it's lasted this long. Unless the new movie completely tanks and calls off any re-birth for the franchise, I can see it being remembered in 100 years. Assuming, of course, we don't kill each other first.

Agreed.

I am with you! I think we have a better chance of killing ourselves!!!

The irony, of course, being that Trek would be the cause of it. The minor squabbling between DS9 and VGR fans will eventually explode into fully armed conflict. This, of course, will combine with the Shipper Wars started in the ENT forum, which will re-ignite the Kirk v. Picard battle, which was long thought over.

I think these battles are actually good for TREK. It keeps us talking about it, and that is a good thing I think. We will all never agree on everything. I think watching people argue their points with wit and facts is actually fun to enjoy.
