Trek #1 For Two Weekends

Do you think it is possible for Star Trek to both open in first place at the box office and remain there next weekend? What is opening next weekend that is considered most likely for #1 and could Trek beat it?

I've wondered this too...everytime I have seen the Angels and Demons trailer in a theater, I've heard nothing but giggles and groans. But then, there is a sizable portion of the moviegoing audience who will go out to see anything with Tom Hanks. I guess where Star Trek can really make its money on Weekend #2 is with young people who don't want to watch a stodgy Catholic Church/Tom Hanks movie.

I don't think it'll hold off Angels and Demons. Terminator opens up the week after so it probably will be taken out of the top spot by then. I do think the good thing about this movie is that it's a movie I would go see again and a lot of people would go see again. I don't think you can say the same for A&D next week.

If Trek opens with more than $80 Million its possible it will hold off Angels & Demons which looks good, but hasn't gotten nearly the buzz Da Vinci Code got.

I think Angels and Demons is going to smoke Trek, sadly. Then again, we haven't seen a single box-office report yet so Trek might have more appeal than I think.

No, Star trek will not be #1 for 2 weekends in a row.

Trek optimistically will open to around 70-75 million this weekend, and with a generous 45% drop next weekend, it will make 33.75 next weekend.

Angels and Demons will get around 55-70 million next weekend.

I think it's more a cumulative effect than any one film knocking it out. Wolverine is still out there. Add in Angles, Terminator and Transformers a couple of weeks after and you have a LOT of movies competing for the same dollars. It's going to be hard for ANY movie to have legs.

In a good enconomy that might not matter all that much. But, if Fandango's polls are accurate and only 20% of those actually planning to see this movie are under 25, their prime demographic plans on seeing something else this summer.

This movie needs to open to around $80-100m to really hope to make $150m.

I still find it telling that the world premier was somewhere other than the U.S.. I think DVD rentals will probably do well, though.

Da Vinci Code opened with 77 Million and that had MUCH more buzz then Angels & Demons does. I think 50 is what to expect from A&D.

Star Trek will be #1 until Terminator Salvation opens in 2 weeks. A&D looks as BORING as the first one...

Angels & Demons will probably do close to what Trek does this weekend, and Trek will fall somewhere in the 40-60% range, so it's doubtful. If Trek does $100+ million this weekend, then yeah, but otherwise, I really doubt it.

Thats only if Trek Opens at 75 Mil and drops to 35. With these reviews and buzz, I think both of those sound a little under.

Considering the insane level of advertising Trek has enjoyed,, I think it has a good shot of holding two weekends. I've seen absurd A&D advertising in the AMC theater not not so much on TV.

Well I guess anything is possible. But for this scenairo to play out, Trek would have to hit 100 million + OW, Hit 50% and lower on the 2nd week drop.

That rarely happens for sci-fi/fantasy movies.

What you can hope for is Iron Man type legs. After the 2nd weekend (almost a 50% drop), Iron man pretty much only had 25-40% drops the rest of the way.

Box Office Prophets just came out with their prediction....61 million for the weekend. If that is the number Trek will not be #1 next weekend. The film shouldn't get a lot of good word of mouth as it really doesn't deserve it.

I hope what you have inquired about does transpire though...for the good of the trek long term.

Sorry your one opinion does not change that the overall word of mouth has been amazing.

If you look around at the reviews and all the commentary online though, you must admit that it's unlikely that your point of view on word of mouth is going to be the prevailing one in this case.
