Travelers

Dingo

Captain
Captain
Just out of curiosity, what kind of visual effects did they use when Travelers appear in TNG? It's been a while since I've watched TNG and I'm doing some research for some fanfiction I'm writing.

Additionally were Travelers detectable by standard intruder alert/internal security scans?

^We would never know. Both times the Traveller were board (at least I think it was twice, he wasn't a intruder.

In Season One, he comes aboard disguised as the assistant to guest engineer. I assume he otherwise just appears much the same way as Q - one moment he's not there, the next one he is. Being that both beings are "physically" capable rather than technologically capable, it would be harder for sensors to detect them, depending on what "markers" or "emissions" or other energy signature is generated (in Q's case, none [detectable]).

Q often insists on appearing with a warp flash. But given his personality, we might safely conjecture that the flash is there purely for, well, flashiness. (At least two other Q members in TNG use the same flash, though. But they aren't exactly the sort to avoid Lord Warp-Flashheart style grand entrances and exits, either.)

The Traveler in contrast is modest enough that he might insist on always just walking in. Since he most probably can stop time (see his apprentice do it in "Journey's End"), he should be able to enter unseen until he's right behind the door, and then humbly knock...

Timo: Alternatively, the flash was merely for the benefit of the viewers; so they would "know" that something was going on (and also to hide the the footage being spliced in :D)

Doesn't The Traveler phase-in (almost like a horizonal streak transporter effect) in "Remember Me"?

I should have the answer to that question in a week or so, actually, given that I'm doing a TNG rewatch.

Or, more likely...that's just what they do.

"This is what we saw everyone do...so it's 'safe to assume' that it was there only for flashiness because we have no direct evidence refuting this. (I'm not going to refute this)"

It's also safe to assume that Picard is reptilian, because he never said he wasn't.

I'd say we know enough about Q's personality that it's reasonable to conclude he might be doing it just for effect. Lord knows he wasn't above using his powers for trivial effect.

I would have been amused if we'd ever seen anyone ask him about that.

Heh. The Q are the closest thing to truly omnipotent entities in Trek. It would be somewhat odd for them to be capable of everything only on the condition that it be accompanied with a warp flash...

So sure, it's what they do. But it isn't something they have to do. ;)

No. Stop it.
