Transporters would contribute to crime

^ There's really no reason public transit like subways, buses, streetcars, etc. will all be replaced by transporters. Some people just won't want to use them. I know I wouldn't.

And besides, we've seen the streets of San Francisco before, clearly showing all manner of vehicles operating on them. So there will obviously be many ways of getting around that don't involve the transporter.

About the name, though...I hear ya. I suppose there was some kind of rights issue preventing them from using BART.

I feel like if transporters were the only public transportation system, the lines would be super long at every station. Personally, I'd probably only use a transporter station to go long distances across Earth.

I wonder if there are sanctuary zones in which no transport signals allowed? The equivalent of a state or national park. Complete freedom from annular confinement beams.

National parks (Away from the tourist zones) are the place you most want to be able to transport out. Chased by a bear, surrounded by a pack of wolves, lose your footing too close to a cliff? Press the button. They might even have scans on popular rock climbing areas to detect people plummeting to their death.

It's more crowded urban areas, particularly in business or residences, you'd want no transport signals.
